Stopping Forum support activity in protest against Avid
Posted by Bob Morabito - 19 Apr 04:21AM (edited 19 Apr 04:56AM)
Ive decided I can no longer freely give of so much of my time--precious time-- to help answer questions Avid support should be answering, when in return we as users in the past saw Daniel and all being fired, and now have the new subscription plan.

I wasnt active on the forum like I am now, during the time with Daniel, or Id like to think I would have stopped then.
I always admired what Bob Z did then, and is doing now to show his displeasure with Avid.

Way to go Bob!

And I say precious time as those of you who know me personally know Im a Viet Nam vet, and Agent Orange victim with many severe health problems, so time IS precious--and using it to help others keeps me going, and Ive tremendously enjoyed helping many people here, but I simply cant in good conscience do it anymore, with Avids recent, and past actions, which I consider simply horrible..

I realize this will make absolutely NO difference in anything, and the forum, and Avid will continue just fine without me... but in all good conscience I simply wont continue doing Avids job for them.

The EXCELLENT support from this forum, and our word of mouth recommendations to buy Sib helps to sell and provide support for Sibelius to many many users, while we quite often hear horror stories about Avids own support, and peoples experience with them.

As someone so beautifully put it "we are Avids Sales team"..but I will NOT help sell Sibelius any more.

And I wont continue getting screwed along with everyone else, while watching the CEO make 7 million bucks last year, and this forum, and the EXCELLENT support here being part of the reason why hes so rich, and why Sibelius is considered such an EXCELLENT program..

And as a thank you we get a subscription plan, with the added SPECIAL thank you severe punishment of having to rebuy Sib AGAIN for $700 bucks if we fall of the subscription plan.

Unreal.

There have been many really great people here, and Im thankful to have met you, and known you, and worked along side of you here on the forum.

And to Mr Louis Hernandez, CEO-- shame on you for what youve done, and are doing to Sibelius, its users, its developers, etc--

youve taken something really special, and seem hell bent on TOTALLY destroying it, while making HUGE bucks doing so.

SHAME ON YOU

Thanks Bob

PS The two polls I recently posted shows Im not alone in feeling this way.

I have noticed we have approximately 45 people on this forum who actively help people with their Sibelius or notational issues.
If all those would stop further interactions on this forum it would severely undermine Sibelius as a viable and active program in the casual persons eyes.
This might be a good action for all to take.
It can/may be difficult as a good deal derive pleasure in the passing on of knowledge to someone else.

I stopped taking an active roll as soon as Daniel's team were fired (not that I was *that* active!). Daniel was on this forum almost endlessly as many of us remember, often into the small hours. I noticed then that some very good people suddenly stepped in to cover for the huge void that Daniel left. Bob Morabito not least among them (and Robin W). So my tribute here to them. It's a serious step for someone like Bob to take and I'll bet it hurts. Take note Avid. For once.

I am willing to boycott this forum, too. I have protested Adobe's Creative Cloud 7 subscription plan, opting to stick with my perpetual license for Creative Suite 6/6.5. This decision has only bit me once so far – I recently received a CC7 Illustrator document from a huge and important client of mine. The file "may have lost some information" when being opened up in Illustrator 6.5. I was able to work with the file, thankfully, and get the job done. I think layer information was jettisoned. This is how these companies extort money form us – adding new (mostly unneeded) features while refusing to make files fully backwardly compatible. Plus, some longstanding coding bugs affecting core functionality may remain unfixed (like creating a harp glissando that sticks to the notes and is able to cross staves). Subscription-based licensing is an evil thing for many people with fewer resources. Imagine paying the piper every month in perpetuity, rather than just once, up front. I encourage everyone to stick with Sibelius 7.5 or look at alternative engraving programs.

Thanks for all, Bob. It's sad to hear such things from you, but I understand.

..and no more a cent to avid: I'll stick with 6.2 then we'll see. Rather paper and pencil. Or go with the free Musescore! Of course the professional engravers must work with professional programs. That is the evil in the thing: someone will be *forced* to accept!

Thanks for all you help Bob.

As to boycotting this forum, bear in mind that that may actually help Avid by driving people towards getting paid support if they can't set their issues sorted out here. Avid's vision for the future is one where everyone is connected to the Avid collaboration platform (Avid Everywhere, Avid Cloud Cloud Collaboration, Avid Marketplace), with expanded options to buy updates and upgrades and e.g. new plugins for Pro Tools. Fascinating and creepy at the same time (One Ring to Rule Them All, Hal9000, Skynet, etc.).

Just like buying into Mac. Not that M$ wouldn't love to move the same way!

Is it continuous support? Or was there something about a certain number of tickets each subscription year?

Bob, I wish there were a way to abandon Avid without abandoning Sibelius users. The help you've provided is going to be missed greatly. And this kind of help is going to be even more important as people disconnect from Avid.

I hope all of us that are frustrated with Avid will find some way of maintaining a community of Sibelius users - some way of providing mutual support. The forum at http://www.sibeliusforum.com/ has no connection with Avid. Maybe we should consider moving there.

However it comes about, I hope we cross paths again in the future - maybe on a Steinberg forum :-).

Is M$ really still either meaningful or necessary? (I worked there a long time and find it rather offensive, but don't mind me).

Microsoft is also trying to convince people subscriptions are good. Office 365 is that.

I still don't care for it.

Have just seen your `resignation` and wish you well colleague. $7M? How obscene, but then I did post something about yachts in the big thread.
It`d be outrageous if all large boat manufacturers were to sell their products with a licence proviso that half a million dollars annual subscription was required. Don`t think the boat owners would like that somehow.

PS Perhaps if the Sib user base was treated more fairly, and stuff like Daniel at all, and this subscription plan never happened, there would be no need for actions like this, and those taken by other Sib users.

But knowing Avid, it will NEVER be.

Thanks so much Bob..very much appreciated, and again I applaud you for the stance you took with the plugins, in protest against what Avid had done with Daniel and all.
