In a string quartet there is a passage in which the instruments play con sordino. Is it possible to hear this muted sound in the playback?

Write "con sord" or "con sordino" in Technique Text style where you want this to happen.

The beginning of the passage in question is attached below. As to Sound Libraries, I haven't a clue. The chapter in the manual called "SoundWorld" is pretty much a mystery to me: incomprehensible, thus. Is there a simple way of getting the "con sord." sound? Like pushing a button or something? Sorry. I'm frustrated.

Eugene, you appear to be using "Sibelius 7 Sounds" as your playback configuration.

The Sibelius 7 Sounds sample library does not support "con sordino" for the solo stringed instruments; it is supported only for the ensemble instruments.

I have switched the configuration from "Sibelius 7 sounds" to "Sibelius 7 sounds (chamber)", but that doesn't have any effect. Sibelius 7 sounds, thus, if I understand you correctly, will not create the sound of muted solo strings. Is there some other sound program that I might use?

Just use the ensemble versions. If they weren't labelled "solo" and "ensemble" it's quite likely you wouldn't notice the difference anyway.
