Sib. 7.1.3: Sibelius spontaneously changes sounds
Posted by Ian Phillips-Kerr - 10 Apr 12:48PM
Sib 7.1.3 PC Windows 7 Professional service pack 1, 64 bit, 4Gb Ram. Intel Pentium CPU G2030 @ 3 Ghz

Sibelius spontaneously changes sounds. The sounds and MIDI channels used for the instruments in the attached score spontaneously changed without my doing anything. E.g. all woodwind changed to panpipes, glock. to timp., violin solo to celli. See page 15 bar 361 – all brass replay as horns. Page 20 the violin solo and viola replay as celli. Page 52 the piccolo replays as panpipes. There are a large number of instruments in the score so perhaps Sibelius was just trying to give the closest sound it could with only 16 MIDI channels. However when I added more (blank staves) instruments of the same type that had changed (e.g. flutes, oboes) the sounds for the original flute and oboe of instruments with music on them changed back to the correct sound. But adding extra blank stave instruments didn’t in all cases make the original sound revert to their correct sound. Configuration in this score is Sibelius 7 Sounds which the manual says can play up to 128 different sounds simultaneously depending on computer resources. The audio options are Primary sound driver DS, buffer size 4096, sample rate 44100. I tried changing to WASABI but as Sibelius played the score no sound came out. The mixer showed sounds were being activated. I also have another score where the addition of a vocal staff made many instruments (string, wind) change to marimba!. The deletion of the vocal staff did not make the sounds revert to what they should be. My computer seems to have these resources so what’s going on? I would like all the sounds to replay correctly. Am I missing something that needs to be set up in order for the instruments to replay with the correct sounds? Can anyone help, please? Many thanks Ian Phillips-Kerr

Could this be a not enough RAM issue?

You have 4 GB, and your Sib file is 737k..

Thanks Bob

Did you try Sib 7 Sounds (Lite) or General Midi?

Thanks Bob

Has the right score been posted?
I cannot find a bar 361 on page 15.
I cannot find a Violin Solo on page 20.
I cannot find a piccolo on page 52.

In any case, I am amazed that this score can be played at all in only 4GB of RAM: I imagine that Sibelius has completely run out of available memory long before the 31 different instruments plus all their variant sounds have been loaded.

> which the manual says can play up to 128 different sounds simultaneously depending on computer resources...

1. your computer does not have adequate resources;
2. 128 different sounds does not mean 128 instruments: you have to count up the total number of variant sounds (articulations etc) available in the sample library for each instrument in the score.

Please also check the settings in Sibelius Preferences -> Playback -> Slot and Channel Sharing.

Do you have ASIO option in Audio Interface.

I don't think you will be successful using Direct Sound (DS)

As already stated - 4gb RAM is unlikely to be enough.

It plays back here OK but using ASIO and 32gb RAM.

edit
And re-setting mixer to Auto

> the piccolo replays as panpipes.

This is because the Piccolo is forcibly assigned to a Panpipe sound in the Sibelius Mixer.

Quite a number of instruments have had their sounds forcibly assigned in the Mixer (i.e. the normal Sibelius sound assignment has been over-ridden).

The page and bar numbers were incorrect, they should read p18 - brass, p24 vln solo, p56 piccolo - apologies. All different sound configurations were tried - no luck. I don't have an ASIO interface. I suppose forcibly assigned means I changed the sounds in the mixer. I only did this when the wrong sounds were playing.

However changing the MIDI channels in Preferences -> Playback -> maximum number of channels to 32 has solved the problem. Many thanks all who responded. Ian
