Sib. 7.1.3: Order of fermata and fingering
Posted by hansdeschryver - 29 Mar 04:53AM
Without any notatino books at hand, I would like to ask this forum for opinions about a notational issue.
In a cello part, do you generally put fingering above a fermata sign, or the fermata sign above the fingering?

Which of the 2 examples below is recommended?

Thanks!
Hans

#1 looks better to me, because the fingering is in line. Anything that is in line (text, articulation, phrasing &c,) is easiest to follow.

I agree with Adrian that the first of your two solutions looks better. However, you might also consider fingering placed consistently near the note heads.

Elaine Gould writes, "Fingering may be provided in educational music and otherwise to illustrate technical manoeuvres. Many editions contain no fingering at all." So consider first whether you need any fingering.

Then she illustrates piano fingering predominantly above the staff, sometimes below. Guitar fingering she shows near the note heads.
