Sib. 7.5: Can I create a duplicate part, with all layout and spacing the same?
Posted by Elizabeth Alexander - 23 Mar 08:13PM
I have composed a piece for chorus and orchestra, and I have created parts from it -- a conductor's score, and a choral part with the piano reduction. I've spent time laying the parts out nicely on the page.

Now I wish to create exact duplicates of these two parts, so that I can make room for some custom information at the bottom of each page. (Kind of like a "Save As" for a part.) I wish to save copies of the original parts, for times that I don't need the custom information.

It seems like this should be possible, but I can't figure out how to do it.

(I know I can copy the part layout and apply it to a new part, but of course it doesn't copy everything about the old part, just some things!)

Thank you for any help you can offer.

Elizabeth

Try pushing the Parts tab and push the New Part icon, then select the Part in the left-hand column and push "Add to Part" and "OK".

Click on the name of the instrument in the top left-hand of the newly created Part and re-name the duplicate parts "Choral Part (custom)" and "Conductor Score (custom)" or some such when all editing is done. You can recall the parts using the + sign in top-right of Sib Screen.
=====
If you want to do this to the SCORE, you're better off duplicating the whole score or create a new VERSION. (Review tab > New Version)

Yours is a good idea, except that the choral part doesn't appear in the left hand column. Only the individual staves appear: Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass and Piano. If I select them all, I get a newly generated part, with no formatting.

This is because the choral part itself was originally created by pushing the New Part icon, selecting all the voices (SATB) plus the piano, and then naming it "Choral Part."

Any other thoughts?

Why not add the custom information to the parts and simply hide and unhide it as required? Richard's idea of using different versions of the score (hence the parts) within a file would also work very well as long as you no longer want to edit the music.

Thank you for giving such creative thought to this question.

Your idea about the custom information is okay, except that it takes up about an inch of vertical space, and it looks odd in a published choral score to have all that empty space at the bottom of the page.

Creating a version is not a bad idea either. I hadn't thought of that. However, I am known to edit/correct scores after several different performers have had a chance to learn the music, so I would need to remember to put any changes into both versions. (That's the question...can I remember to do that consistently?)

For now, I think I may need to just create a duplicate part by selecting the individual staves, and then copy the original part's layout into that part, and then sit down with the duplicate part some evening and tweak away at the vertical spacing. (There are worse things I could be doing with my time.)

Cheers,

Elizabeth
