Sib. 6.x: Hide Empty Staves
Posted by Michael Bennett - 21 Mar 12:19AM
I have a score that has a descant that comes in towards the end of the piece. I selected the entire score and chose "Hide Empty Staves" from the layout menu. The descant staff is hidden until it is needed at the end of the piece, but at the very beginning of the piece, when there is only a piano intro playing, the soprano, alto, tenor and bass lines are hidden (as they should be at this point) but for some reason, the empty descant staff appears. Not sure how to get rid of it. I'm attaching the score.

Thanks,
Michael

You've got a "P" in the first bar of the descant, lurking just under the metronome mark. Delete that, try Hide Empty Staves again and all should be well.

That did it. Thanks. I thought a staff was empty if it didn't have any notes.

Excuse me for being nosey, Michael. I'm struggling to figure how the final 6/4 bar should be interpreted. In any case, I think you have missed a couple of ties in the bass part.

Removing the 'p' in bar 1,as Steve points out, shows you how literal Sibelius is when it comes to hiding 'empty' staves.

To count as 'empty' a bar/staff must have no staff attachments or content, multi-measure rests will also be broken. Bar rests, other than the default whole bar rest, count as content.

You will see this illustrated in your score:

You have quite a few empty bars (Alto/Tenor b 16/18/19 and piano b90/91 plus others) which have a mixture of rests. If you look at the individual dynamic parts you will see that the multi-measure rests break incorrectly, also, staves containing these bars couldn't be hidden.
To avoid this - select whole bar(s) and delete so that the default whole bar rest shows (not whole note rest)

You may not be printing separate parts from this score but you see how easy it is to delete notes and leave rests which cause these issues.

Be careful how you delete bars tho'. I found hidden MIDI text in m17 of the tenor part. You may want to move this to a safer position. Same in the bass part.

Hi. I've written a book of 5 pieces for strings which I have put as an appended score. Only one piece has a snare drum in it. When I look at the snare drum part all the other pieces are there with TACET over them. Can I get rid of those pieces in the snare drum part so that the part only has the one piece on it, the one the snare drum is in?

Only by extracting the part for snare drum and deleting the unnecessary movements.
