Sib. 7.5: Out-of-range notes
Posted by William444 - 16 Mar 07:27PM
Hello, folks, just getting started and loving it.

Can I make Sibelius play notes that are out of range for an instrument (shown red)? Or should I just change the range of the instrument?

Any help much appreciated.

If a note is so out-of-range that it is not included in the Sibelius 7 Sounds sample library, then it cannot be played. This applies regardless of the colouring system in the Sibelius notation application itself. You cannot make an out-of-range note playable just by changing the defined range of the instrument.

Perhaps, instead, you should choose instruments which are capable of playing the notes you want.

Of course - makes sense.

I was getting in a tangle as the instrument is an Octave Mandola which sounds an octave lower than the written note.

Many thanks, Robin, much appreciated.

This has probably occurred to you, but you can use another similar string instrument which has the proper range for playback and turn the sound off at all other times.

Thank you, Richard, it had not occurred to me but it's a good idea.

Would you be kind enough to have a go at explaining the transposing instrument thing? I have created the instrument OK (octave mandola) but am struggling a bit with the transposition part of the edit routine.

I presume the clef is Bass down an 8ve. (When the player reads C4, it comes out as C3.)

Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm assuming this is what's also, confusingly, referred to as an Octave Mandolin, tuned GDAE an octave below a mandolin. If so, I'd write it in treble clef, an octave higher than sounding - ie same transposition as a guitar (so you could use a guitar stave and change the name and, if you can be bothered or don't trust yourself to remember it, the range - all the notes should be there).
I'd suggest writing any plucked string instruments other than basses-and-associated in transposed treble clef, even baritone guitars, but at the end of the day I guess it depends who's reading it!

Of course - so much simpler that way. Spoke to the player and he's fine with it.

Thank you so much for your time and trouble, Stephen.

Still struggling with notes that won't play back. This is for a standard mandolin (not the 8ve version discussed earlier). I've set the range of the mandolin from G3 to C7 which I'm pretty sure is right but still anything over C6 does not play back.

Any help would be much appreciated.

You cannot magically playback notes for which no samples exist in the sample library. Setting the "range" of an instrument definition has no effect on playback: it just alters the range of notes that will be coloured black rather than red (out of range).

Isn't the top C6?

Thanks for the reply Robert. No, I don't think so. C6 is 2 ledger lines above the treble stave isn't it? The mandolin range is the same as the violin - at least 1 whole octave above that.

Depends whether middle C is called C3 or C4.
The mandolin range I saw was the octave above two ledger lines above the staff.
But if the mandolin samples in Sib sounds don't go that high then you are out of luck because they just aren't there.

OK, fair enough, so what do I have to do to make these notes play? They're not at all unusual notes are they? Surely I can play back D6?

No, there are no samples for such pitches available in the Sibelius 7 Sounds sample library.

If you wish to play back such pitches on the mandolin, then you have two choices:
1. playback using General MIDI (Basic);
2. acquire a sample library and player which include those mandolin pitches.
