Sib. 7.1.3: SVG Export
Posted by Warren - 27 Feb 04:19PM (edited 27 Feb 04:21PM)
Does anyone have experience exporting graphic selections from Sibelius 7 in SVG format?

When I export a graphic selection, say a four bar excerpt, for example, I get an SVG that is 8.5" by 11" every time; in other words a full page export. This result is not useable.

On the export / graphics page in S7 I have the following options selected:

1. Graphics format SVG

2.PAGES - set to "graphic selection"

Even with these setting I always get a full page export when selecting a four bar phrase.

I'm not sure where I am going wrong in the process. If anyone has any tips please let me know.

Thanks!

It works here in Sibelius 7.5.1. I suppose it could be something that was fixed since your Sibelius 7.1.3, but I don't see anything in the update announcement.

You ARE making a Graphics Selection, not just selecting 4 bars in the usual way?

Yes, been like that for a long time, if you have some vector graphic application you can crop it there but really annoying. I don't think you do anything wrong. Surely a bug

Thanks for your time Laurence,

I am using ALT+G to create a graphics selection; NOT a typical copy CRTL + C command.

Oh, I see what you mean. You get the required selection, but the canvas is full page. Yes, bummer.

I agree Laurence, total bummer. Totally useless, so close yet so far away.

Do you know of a way to trim the canvas size in a vector editing program. I have been trying but haven't been successful.

I'm working with Open Office Draw.

Oh by the way, are you getting the same result in S7.5?

There is no need for me to upgrade if its the same result I am getting now.

Thanks!

This situation is quite normal for vector graphics export: it is the same with EPS and PDF. One complete page gets exported, with a Bounding Box matching your Alt-G selection. The application into which you import the SVG should interpret the Bounding Box, and display the result you want.

Hi Robin,

Thanks for your reply! Have you actully done this successfully? if so, please do tell which Graphics editor software your are using. I have tried COREL DRAW X5, (latest)inkscape, and (latest) OpenOffice DRAW; and the SVG import does not work in the way you described. Thanks for your help!

The SVG bounding box works for me when a Sibelius SVG is imported into Adobe Illustrator, and when imported into Inkscape. LibreOffice Draw seems to ignore the Bounding Box.

However, even with bounding box recognised, there is so much else wrong with the SVG import in those two applications that the result is worthless. The SVG format does not seem to be of much use when so many applications make a mess of importing it. Inkscape gets fonts wrong, Illustrator gets line widths wrong.

Does anyone know of an application that can interpret SVG graphics files correctly?

I think I'm going to move on and forget about this SVG exporting from S7. It's probably not worth the trouble. It seems like a good feature but in reality not so much. Thanks for all your help!

Try EPS or PDF instead, if your other applications can import them.

Try an assortment of web browsers. That was the motivation for inventing SVG - scalable vector graphics that work with HTML 5.

I don't see any added value over PDF or EPS if you want to embed the images in a document with a "fixed" format tied to the page size, etc. The functionality is the same and the SVG files are likely to be bigger than the equivalent PDF or EPS.

However there have been issues with some versions of Sib which (idiotically) rasterized the graphics itself and embeds the bitmap in the PDF, rather than letting the PDF renderer do the rasterizing at whatever resolution is appropriate. (I have no idea what Sib 7 does regarding this).

Inkscape uses SVG as its internal file format (plus some custom tags, which is an extension allowed by the SVG standard). It can be temperamental about importing non-standard-compliant files though.

I think the latest Version of Inkscape (0.91) does a much better job importing svgs and pdfs from Sibelius than the 0.48 versions.
But as mentioned and like OODraw it imports the whole page with the bounderies covered by white boxes.
Nonetheless if you want to create 1-page documents with lots of graphics Inkscape is a great tool. Instead of exporting a graphics selection in Sibelius just export the whole page as pdf or svg (better text handling) and use Inkscape's clip view: place a (e.g.semitransparent) box over the wanted area select all and set clip (in the right click context menu).
The cheapest and fastest software with the best pdf and svg import I know is Xara/Magix Photo&Graphic Designer or the big version Designer Pro (not so cheap). At the moment I don't know about its boundingbox handling but it also has clip view.

If you really want an svg that is cut correctly: After setting the clip in Inkscape go to file/document setting and set the page size to selection. then export the svg.

Thanks for drawing attention to this new Inkscape version. It does indeed seem to do a better job with SVG graphics from Sibelius.

On Mac, Affinity Designer copes with this for me. But it costs a bit (nothing like as expensive as Adobe Illustrator though).

Beg pardon, you don't mean the image, you mean the selection box. Hmm. I'm afraid Affinity won't work either in that case. Sorry I misunderstood.

Whatever you select, Sibelius is actually exporting the whole page and simply masking the bits you didn't select. In Affinity at least you can unmask those bits and voila, there's the whole page of music! It has to be Sibelius that's the problem, surely; how could Affinity 'know' about the rest of the page I (apparently) didn't export?

Can somebody who is on Sibelius 7.5.1 send me some SVGs from graphic selection. I've written a converter (LibreOffice macro)that reads the SVGs from Sibelius and corrects the viewbox in the SVG. Furthermore it deletes all the unused stuff hidden behind the white masks, reducing the file size down to 1/4.
So far it works great with all the 7.1.3 files I've threwn at it.

Best would be a zip-file with SVGs from graphic selection as: middle, left, right, top, bottom. Take your most complicated score.
Thanks!

Kai, I've emailed you a set of 5 SVG exports from the same page of a score in Sib 7.5.1 (in a zip file). I hope they may be of use in your testing.
