I was working on an orchestral score in 7.1.3. The sounds were working fine. I decided to install my 7.5 to see if there was any improvement to the sound (specifically improvement to the very non-legato horn sound, you know, the one that accents the beginning of every note for some weird reason). After updating and applying the patch (but not re-installing the sounds, I read in this forum that if I already had Sib 7 sounds it was sufficient to only install the Sib 7.5 sound patch), many sounds would not work in the same score when opened in 7.5. So I decided to go back to Sib 7. Now the sounds are messed up in Sib 7. What should I do?

You need to do these things in order:

First: apply the Sibelius 7 Sounds updater to version 7.5;
Second: apply the Bass Clarinet patch referred to by Laurence above.

The score attached above plays back fine here.

Is this issue on Mac OS or on Windows?

Thank you so much for your quick response. My issue is on Windows 7. One question, when you say the "Sibelius 7 Sounds updater" is that the same thing as the file I have named "Sibelius Sounds Updater 7.5.0 installer"? One problem with the sounds that I had was with all of the clarinet sounds, but I was also unable to get any playback sound for the strings and harp.

If, as you said, you've already run the 7.5 Sounds update, the next step is to apply the Bass Clarinet patch. It involves downloading a small zip archive, extracting the one file inside it and putting it in a particular location on your computer. Instructions are provided.

It fixes more than just clarinet sounds. Just do it, there's no alternative!

I applied the patch. The clarinet sounds in Sib 7 are still messed up (Clarinet Bb and Bass Clarinet). When I open the score in 7.5 neither the harp nor the strings still produce any sound during playback. So it doesn't appear that anything has changed by applying the patch.

Interesting, when I opened the score by double clicking on the file (which opens it with Sib 7.5) a lot of sound card dialogues loaded (very rapidly), then the score started working in Sib 7.5. So now I'm just left with clarinet problems in Sib 7.

The only thing I'm wondering about is that the sounds have a little bit of clipping (or something that sounds like clipping) in Sib 7.5 that they don't in Sib 7. Is that even possible? Could I have changed a setting in 7 that defaulted differently in 7.5 that could cause that?

There are really very few differences between the Sounds in 7 and 7.5.

But it's quite easy to overload the Mixer in Sibelius. Be very wary of pushing a channel above the nominal 0 setting, if something needs a boost, turn everything ELSE down. And similarly, beware of pushing up the master fader. If you're listening to playback and it's too soft, turn your speakers up. If Exporting Audio, it's safer to normalize (or even compress) in an external sound editor than to push the limits of the Sibelius mixer.
