Sib. 7.1.3: MP3`s?
Posted by Tony Wakefield - 26 Feb 05:12PM
Someone has probably enquired already but my save to audio .wav had worked well, but I thought I saw Sib say it could then convert the wav to mp3 somewhere. Is this correct? I can`t find how to.
Thanks.

Sib doesnt convert to mp3..you need a third party program to do that.

People use Itunes, Audacity, Switch, etc.

Thanks Bob

Sibelius can't.

But you can, with any number of external programs, some of them free. It can even be a reason to install iTunes, though watch out it doesn't take you over completely!

I can recommend Audacity - especially as it is free!

Actualluy, i think you can.

On the export window - change where it says 'aiff' (or what ever the extension is) in the file name to 'mp3'

That should do it.

That won't make it an MP3, just a wav/aiff named with the MP3 extension.

Media players can be very forgiving of wrong file extensions. Give it an MP3 labelled .WAV and if it can play it, it will, without arguing. Rather like .AVI with video files. That extension can label a multitude of formats.

And, even if it has been re-named as an mp3, if it still a .wav or aiff file, it will still be very large. An mp3 is about a tenth as large as the original (or near enough - please don't yell about my math!).

And it's amazing how good a 192kbs rate MP3 (or even, at a pinch, a 128) is! You might not master your CD from it, but the music comes through perfectly well.

Which doesn't change the fact that calling a WAV an MP3 doesn't make it into one or reduce its size. Of course, it doesn't throw away any quality either...

Well I am now using `Pyro Audio Creator` which is easy to use. Several other useful features also included. I have downloaded Audacity but find Pyro more logical.
I also discovered `Song Surgeon` which transposes the mp3 and wav files into new keys should you want this. Don`t know if it can cope with large files tho`.
Have just entered somthing into a competition, and have spent much of the afternoon sorting out a BT Cloud facility to upload the audio, and the scores`n`parts.
Found another comp. which states that two contestants must apply - one under 25 and the other over 65. Can`t enter as I don`t know any over 65 :))))

Another converter that I think is very good, and free, is Free Audio Converter by Freemake. You can get it here: http://www.freemake.com/free_audio_converter It is only available for Windows I believe.

Out of interest, do these free converters have any additional features like Fade Out?

Just wondering?

Thanks

Thanks for that!

The reason I enquired is because I often get asked about Free stuff, by beginners especially!
