Sib. 7.5: Grey text above MIDI notation
Posted by BeeCee - 25 Feb 11:10PM
I'm doing note input via my Sonuus Midi converter. When I record in Flextime, I keep getting a bunch of grey text at the top of the recorded staff. It happens when using both keyboard and guitar but only when I'm recording the parts. The grey text doesn't appear when doing midi simple entry. They aren't chord symbols or articulations either. They're nonsense to me and there are so many of them written one after the other that it looks like a grey bar above the staff. If I click on it, part of the text will turn black so I can read it. It usually starts with ~B then a series of two numbers with a comma. I've attached a picture where you can see the grey text and the bolded text.

Anyone know what this is and how to stop it when using midi notation?

These are the recorded MIDI commands in the data stream from the MIDI device. For instance, ~B is a pitch bend.

If you want to eliminate them, you can simply select all, then filter text containing ~ and delete. But are you sure you really want to delete them? How would the guitar sound without the pitch bends?

Thanks for the quick reply Robin! I figured it was some kind of Midi numerical value. It's a fairly quick fix to filter technique text and delete. Thanks for that!

I'm really looking for a way to keep them from being written in the first place. Nobody I work with reads Midi. We're all humans in my group. haha. I would write the pitch bend using an articulation mark if I needed it.

Side note: All of the MIDI commands were pitch bends even when using the keyboard. What's that about?

Theyre Midi Messages--pls see in the SIb 7.5.5 pdf ref manual pages 616 ff.

from p 623:

"Any text preceded by a tilde (~) is automatically hidden by Sibelius, so you don’t need to worry about hiding MIDI messages individually. Only the ~ and the messages after it are hidden, so you can still read preceding instructions to the players such as “mute” that are meant to be visible. When you edit the text the ~ message reappears.
The MIDI messages are displayed in gray if View > Invisibles > Hidden Objects (shortcut Shift+Alt+H or xzH) is switched on."

To remove these midi messages, pls see this post/thread:

Thanks Bob

PS They appear to be pitch bend messages, so you might also try this plugin, Category Playback:

Remove MIDI Pitch Bends

You might check that your pitch bend wheel is centered, before starting to record.

Thanks Bob

That's just what I was about to say, Bob. I used to have a keyboard with a slightly dodgy (it turned out) pitch wheel. It looked centred, but was still sending data, which produced said swathes of grey text. You can probably set your keyboard not to transmit pitch bend data if you don't want any.

Turns out the Sonuus converter has two modes for Midi input. I switched it to chromatic and that keeps the midi commands from popping up. Glad I could learned something new about the hidden objects and filter options in Sibelius though. That's good to know.
