I am using a loud gong hit at the end of a tutti phrase and would like to damp it. I could use a dim hairpin but that sounds not very natural. Is there a way to damp it so it will sound still natural?

You could try decreasing the sound of only the gong note, though is isn't a dampening effect, but rather volume.

Click on the Play tab and select the Velocities icon so it is yellow.

Turn on the Inspector click the Live Velocity checkbox and move the down arrow from the default of "80" to something less as in the screenshot attached.

You'll see a blue bar decrease in size as this occurs.

Sorry, try pushing "Live Playback" to the left of the "Velocities" icon in the Play tab.
