Sib. 7.5: Suddenly Sib 7.5 not loading some sounds
Posted by ztrif - 24 Jan 03:46PM
Hi everyone, I am working for a long time on a score for big orchestra, and using the Sib sounds library to play it. I don't know why some of my strings staves suddenly stopped to "understand" certain technic words like "pizz" or "col legno", etc.. A complete mystery for me, an example: Violin I and II still work properly loading every sound, but Violas, Cellos and Basses don't.

My setup is Macbook Pro late 2008 2,93 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8 Gb RAM and MOTU Ultralight (the first model).

What can I try to do? Where could be the problem?

Thank you very much,

Paolo

This is commonly reported on Mac OS: it always affects the staves lowest on the page - normally the strings.

Please try using playback configuration "Sibelius 7 Sounds (Lite)".

Thank you very much Robin, I tried the "Sibelius 7 Sounds (Lite)" and indeed now Violas and Cellos work properly but Basses still not!

Other suggestions?

Thank you,

Paolo

How many staves are there per system in the score?

Does this problem affect all scores, or just this one score?

Please ensure that Preferences -> Playback -> Sibelius Player Options -> Maximum number of channels
is set to 128.

Then:
- in the sequence that follows, do not use search or Spotlight;
- in the Finder, pull down the Go menu, select "Go to Folder" and type in "/Library" with the leading stroke, to open the System Library;
- in the /Library folder, open "Application Support";
- in that folder, open "Avid";
- in that folder, open "Sibelius Sounds";
- in that folder, select "Sibelius 7 Sounds" and type Cmnd-I for Get Info;
- read off the total size of the "Sibelius 7 Sounds" folder in exact bytes, and post the result in your reply.

Dear Robin,

- How many staves are there per system in the score?

System 1 (Woods): 10 staves (2 Flutes (a+b), 2 Oboes (a+b), etc. etc.)

System 2 (Brass): 8 staves

System 3 (Percussions): 2 staves (for 2 percussionist, I quite frequently use the "Change Instrument" to set the instrument I want to be played)

System 4 (Harp): 2 staves

System 5 (Harpsychord): 2 staves

System 6 (Voices): 5 staves (It is a lyric opera! Fortunately without choir!)

System 7 (Strings): 14 staves (1 Vl. solo, 1 Viola solo, 1 Cello solo, 1 Bass solo... these solo strings play very rarely + 2 staves (a+b) per Violin I, 2 staves (a+b) per Violin II, 2 per Violas, etc. etc.)

- Does this problem affect all scores, or just this one score?

I never had problems with other scores, but no one was big like this. This is my first big work with Sibelius, before I worked with Finale...

- Please ensure that Preferences -> Playback -> Sibelius Player Options -> Maximum number of channels
is set to 128.

Absolutely, already checked: 128 Channels.

- Then ...

36.848.609.304 byte (36,85 GB su disco) per 1.166 elementi

Thank you Robin,

Paolo

Paolo,

That appears to add up to 43 staves for which Sibelius needs to pre-load all sound samples for every possible articulation for every instrument. Are you able to use some Mac OS operating system facility to determine whether Sibelius has expanded its RAM usage to the point where 8GB RAM overall is not enough hardware?

Please try the following experiments to see whether they help with the problem.

First, take a safety back-up copy of your problem score file so that nothing in the experiments below can damage the safety back-up copy.

Please report to us what size (in bytes) your problem score file is on disk.

Experiment 1:
- open the problem score in Sibelius 7.5, click Ribbon tab "Review", click "Edit Versions";
- report back on how many Versions of this score are listed within this Sibelius file;
- select the "Current version", click "Export as Score", and save the exported score with a new, different, file name;
- close the current score and quit Sibelius completely;
- launch Sibelius afresh, and open the new score file (exported with a new name two steps above);
- does the new score file now play all staves correctly?

Experiment 2:
- open the problem score in Sibelius 7.5, click Ribbon tab "File", click "Export" -> "Previous version" -> Sibelius 7;
- click button "Export" (you might need to scroll down to see the button);
- save the exported score with a new, different, file name;
- close the current score and quit Sibelius completely;
- launch Sibelius afresh, and open the new score file (exported with a new name two steps above);
- does the new score file now play all staves correctly?
- if so, save it again with another new, different, name, so that it becomes formatted as a Sibelius 7.5 score file.

Please report back.

Hi Robin,

I'm not sure to have perfectly understood what you wrote to me about RAM usage, but I monitored the CPU and MEMORY activity while running Sibelius 7.5 and playing the problem score file. Nothing shocking... the apexes: CPU 66,3 % and MEMORY 3,30 GB. Should I check other parameters, in an other way? Let me know...

The size (in bytes) my problem score file is on disk: 2.320.753 bytes.
Number of versions: 8 (counting the current).

Exp. 1 unsuccessful: using “Sibelius 7 Sounds”, Violas, Cellos and Basses don’t work as they should; using “Sibelius 7 Sounds (Lite)”, Violas and Cellos seem to work properly, Basses still don’t!

Exp. 2 unsuccessful: same behavior…

What if I send you a page of my problem score file and you try to play it and listen if one of the lower staves play correctly a pizz, for example? Does this experiment have sense? I think we should before understand if the score file is corrupted or there is a problem with RAM, or something else...

Thank you, again and again Robin!

Paolo

Your score is too big to attach in this forum, but you are welcome to e-mail it to me. Please let me know what I should be listening to.

Hi Robin, while I was trying to extract a page of my problem score file for you, I made an important discovery: if I copy all staves content of a page of my problem score file in a new score file with the same systems structure, the new one play... well! I imagine you would suggest to me to do the same for all the score and see what happens... I could try, but I have a question: how can I be sure to copy every single element so to exactly re-create the correct musical texture and graphics of my score?

I think this is to be expected, as the issues you are having are associated with the size of the score: so a smaller score might not suffer the same problems.

You could try exporting a complete problem score to MusicXML, and then re-importing the MusicXML to re-create a new Sibelius score file with the same music. This method has the advantage of completely losing any corruption that is embedded within the Sibelius score file format (that might otherwise survive any copying or exporting in Sibelius score file format). But the MusicXML round-trip has the drawback of requiring a lot of tweaking and re-formatting of the score after it has been re-imported.
