Sib. 7.5: Does 7.5--or anything else--sound more realistic than 7.1.3?
Posted by Tom C. Fuller - 23 Jan 04:29PM
I'm using 7.1.3, getting ready for a string of performances. I use the Sibelius sounds (I like Sibelius 7 Sounds Lite better than any other, esp. on regular piano & strings) to accompany my vocal solos. Get good response and the average hearer doesn't notice, but it still lacks something...sounds less than full, when compared to real instruments. Especially lacking in the low ranges, tho adding an electric bass guitar way down there helps.I know Sibelius sounds weren't meant for performance, but I don't have any other alternative at the moment. Is there a reason to upgrade to 7.5? Will it help the actual sound? Thanks.

Sibelius 7.5 uses the same sample library as 7.1.3. There are a few improvements to playback.

Largely imperceptable improvements. More bug-fixes.

You can do a lot to improve perceived playback quality by meticulous attention to dynamics, phrasing, articulations etc. in your score.

Some people swear by Note Performer. But I wouldn't rate the piano as its strongest feature.

If a sound set sounded realistic, there wouldn't be any need for live musicians.

Yeah, but Mr. Sibelius doesn't charge nearly as much as live musicians. I always say live music is better than dead music.

I use NotePerformer library for orchestral stuff, is just eats Sibelius Sounds for lunch.

For Piano, I use PianoTeq, which is IMO the best piano sounds bar-none, since it's a synth rather than samples, it can properly do all of the sympathetic resonances, etc. No sample-based library, event he big multi-GB ones can do that. In addition it gives me a wide range of modeled pianos, from modern Steinways and Bluthners, to early wooden-soundboard pianos from 200 years ago, plus some very serviveable harpsichords and clavichords for even earlier stuff.

That sounds like what I'm looking for, Tyler. Do you have links? Is it pretty easy to load and integrate with Sibelius 7?

NotePerformer is very easy, as it's written explicitly for Sibelius. It installs a new playback configuration, don't have to change the scores at all.

http://www.noteperformer.com/

PianoTeq - This takes a little bit of minimal doing, because it does some things a bit differently, since it's intended more for live playback. Nothing too complicated - it uses the full velocity range, so ppp is 0, and fff is 127, with linear interpretation set up.

I made a house style with an alerted playback dictionary that does that, and also wires up the sustain and una corda pedals to the midi controllers pianoteq is looking for.

For, me, the strings are the main thing. So, Noteperformer sounds like what I'm looking for. I didn't understand half of what you wrote, but it's not your fault since I know only the basics of Sibelius. I compose by laboriously clicking one note at a time on the staves. Get some pretty big sounds, though. A couple of years ago I installed Garritan Sounda, and they'are accessible (as you know) by pressing the Play tab and then selecting the Configuration on the left. Does Noteperformer work the same way? I was, frankly, disappointed in Garrison.

I will be honest and say I think strings are noteperformer's weakest area, but still better than stock sounds. The woodwinds and (especially) brass are very very good, especially for the price point.

IMO, NP applies too much "Random wrongness" to some of the brass sounds. I have raised this with the makers - who accept the fact and say it will be corrected in the next release.

A lot of the immediate appeal of NP may be caused by the very high level of reverb in the default settings. As with over-use of any effect - whether acoustic or an instrumental "extended technique" - it can rapidly become irritating.

Ok, here's one I'm working on, with piano and strings. It's not polished, but I would like to see the difference the software would make, especially on strings. Any suggestions on how to improve it would be appreciated, too. I am a Christian teacher, preacher and singer, and I like for the music to reflect the libretto and subject matter. Thanks for your help. TnT

Does Noteperformer generate an .mp3 / other type of Output File

Whilst I have readers there, I want to alter my Details shown below automatically remembering them. i.e. I now have Cubase 6 NOT SX3 as currently shown below?

And of course IF I purchase Noteperformer, I will need to add that to the current List.

Thanks to all

NP works as a sound set in Sibelius...so you just export audio like you would with the default sounds.

If I upload a smallish sample would you do that for me please before I rush to purchase Noteperformer?

I use Cubase 6 to take advantage of the fantastic EWQLSO Platinum Pro VST sounds, but it is an awful lot of work doing two scores, one in Sibelius then Cubase, so IF Noteperformer is really good, it might be worth purchasing to save me a lot of future duplication?

How comepetitive it is with EWQL I can't say - keep in mind it costs 1/4 of what EQ Gold does. The really nice thing about NP is that it actually reads things like slurs and hairpins from the scores, and generally plays them back quiet well, as well as things like pizz and various other techniques - basically, if it's in the stock sibelius dictionary it will play it back with zero manual futzing around.

Hi Robert

>Whilst I have readers there, I want to alter my Details shown below automatically remembering them. i.e. I now have Cubase 6 NOT SX3 as currently shown below?

Go to the forums home page: http://www.sibelius.com/cgi-bin/helpcenter/chat/chat.pl?groupid=3

And on the top of the page look for Settings-

double click on that, and then Under Forum Settings, look for Signature--
make sure "Use Signature" is checked, and change what needs to be changed.

When you're all finished click "update" at the bottom of the page.

Pl see attachment for these instructions.

Thanks Bob

Hi, I've just got a beta of Noteperformer 1.4 and the little I've tried it, sounds much better. New Piano, Flutes, drums, better brass intonation (The virtual brass players has been practising Laurence), reverb and a bunch of other stuff so try it again after 1.4 is released. Also strings are now built from individual players so you can do real divisi. For me especially smaller ensembles sounds a lot better. I guess it would not be to long before it's released.

Jesper

Also for those of you using NP, it's important to follow the instructions in the manual, setting all mixer faders to zero, set the playback properties etc…
And for me the reverb to Ambient works best, concert hall can be a little to much.

Does NP allow you to export audio direct from Sib rather than having to use a third party prog. (e.g., Audacity)?

Never done it but I think so yes. NP is not very good for Jazz, Big Band etc. though.
unless you want to hear how jazz sounds played by classical musicians. ; - )

If you add a little TLC to the mix, things can sound quite different! Have a listen to these examples I just made, using Sibelius 7 Sounds, Sibelius 6 Essentials, Note Performer and GPO.

The raw versions are simply the score as received.

For the optimized versions, I (very roughly) separated the cello and bass lines, giving each their own stave and sound. Then, in the Mixer, I selected ensemble string sounds for all except the top violin and adjusted the balance.

I don't know which version you prefer. But the range of possibilities is certainly interesting!

I very much like the enhanced Noteperformer version!

Is it possible to send me a Copy?

That would be great and certainly makes Noteperformer more interesting to use in Sibelius!

I'm afraid I didn't save it! Hold on, I'll try to lash it up again...

I think it's as much about choosing ensemble string sounds, separating cellos and basses and mixing as about choice of sound set. You'll obviously want to go into much more detail with the cello and bass parts than I could with simple top note filtering.

Here it is for Sibelius 6 - that ought to satisfy everyone!

As I said - a very rough balance, and a very rough separation of cellos and basses.

I'm afraid you have to wait until it's been tested, As a beta tester I'm not allowed to
spread it. I did get Arnes permission to talk about it though.
I'm sure all NP users will get a mail when it's ready for release.

Wow, interesting sounds. Still looking, tho. Guess I am searching for more of a lush, full sound, especially with deep, realistic bass, especially in strings and brass. I love Sibelius Lite's flugelhorn, and horns, but not trumpets. They sound electronic. Sibelius Lite strings and many instruments are pretty good, but not ideal. I love high highs and especially low lows. i want a sound comparable to the default rubato (or whatever you call it) we hear when starting up Sibelius!

You can find what you want, but its going to cost you $$$.

As a starting point pls see: http://www.try-sound.com/

And try out some there, though they dont have all libraries by any means.

If you find something you like, if it was me Id then check here, to see if theres a sound set for it:

http://www.soundsetproject.com/soundsets/

You can also request a soundset be created.

Id also do the reverse, and check out libraries there are sound sets for, but you can only hear through audio samples on their site, and not on try-sound.

Hope this helps

Thanks Bob Morabito

Tom,
Open your score in Sib full sounds. Open the mixer. At the bottom of each channel is a double right arrow. Click it and a row of smart knobs opens. These change the default sounds quite a bit. For example, for each string section, I raise the release knob to at least 50%, and the legato release to 60%. Amounts vary depending on the music. Settings like this help lush strings up. These settings are not available in lite sounds.
By the way, delete the long fermata on your last note, select the note the regular fermata is on, open the Inspector and you can define the fermata.

The smart-knobs can make a useful difference. But not as big a one as checking whether Sibelius has allocated a solo string sound or an ensemble one to your stave.

If I knew what the smart knobs did, it would be helpful. I took a screen shot of the mixer and zoomed it up to a large size. However, the labels still were unreadable.

In this case, what does "unreadable" mean? Pixelated, blurred, to small? I believe you can make the mixer bigger, if need be. I never had a problem even on my laptop screen.

No attachment was present. On this forum, attachments must be less than 900 kBytes in size, and of type .png, .jpg, or .sib, with those extension spelt in lower case.

The smart knob labels are quite legible to me, but if your operating system is performing any pixel scaling on the display, that might introduce problems.
