Fyi, for anyone who is curious what the fuss is all about, Avid now has a dumbed down version of Pro Tools downloadadable for free:

In the more exciting news department, this morning at the NAMM Spectrasonics introduced Omnisphere 2, the successor its flagship soft synthesizer Omnisphere:

I guess they have realized they can't compete with Reaper on price ;)

Downloadable? Actually, no. The links say "coming soon, sign up now". They can probably make money selling that mailing list even if they never release the software....

For free? Reading between the lines, you won't be able to do any real work with it unless you sign up for their cloud storage options, and/or buy stuff from their apps store.

Subscription pricing for software is the way to go, of course. A dollar a day on your credit card doesn't sound much (and you soon forget you are paying it) compared with $700 once every two years for a new software release. And plenty of musicians can't even count, let alone do math.
