Sib. 6.x: Merge Function?
Posted by James - 20 Jan 10:34PM
Hi

Is there a 'merge' function (Digital Performer tool) equivalent in Sibelius for editing?
I.e. I want to copy one line on to a part that already has notes on it. Currently, for copy and paste, Sibelius deletes what is already there and adds the pasted section but is there a merge key that just adds the notes that are already there? Also in the same voice...

Many thanks in advance

I can't try things here (in the pub, using my tablet) but I think you select just the notes you want to paste, not the passage, and make sure they're in a different voice to what's there already.

Thanks Laurence. Yes that idea does work but I it to be in the same voice... That's where I'm having difficulty. I can't even find a quick work around to it!

Pls see p 516-517 Sib 610 pdf ref man, "Paste into Voice" and attachment.

>but I it to be in the same voice

If what you typed meant you wanted it to be in the same voice, pls see this plugin, "Merge To Voice 1":

Thanks Bob

Paste it in as Laurence instructed, select all, and then change it to one voice, eg Alt 1 for voice 1. If there are note length differences between the parts, sort that out before changing the voice.

An immediate advantage that I can think of for using "Paste into Voice" is that a simple copy of a passage selection is all thats needed-not a multiple, non passage selection, with possible filtering etc.

And a description of the advantages of using Merge to Voice 1 can be found here:

http://www.sibeliusblog.com/tips/two-new-plug-ins/

with a nod being given to this plugin,“Move or Copy to Another Voice” when theres lots of Tuplets involved:

Update #2

Either way, choose whatever works better for you:)

Thanks Bob

The plugin does, indeed, automate the process: Select, Filter Notes, Change Voice, Paste. As so often with plugins, it takes about the same number of clicks/key-presses as doing it manually :-)

Select passage. Click Home tab. Click Filter. Click Notes. Change Voice (Alt-2). Ctrl-C. Ctrl-V. (Or amalgamate the last two into Chord-click). That's 7 (or 6)

Select passage. Ctrl-C. Select destination. Click Note Input tab. Click Plugin. Scroll down to Paste Into Voice. Click Paste Into Voice. Assuming default settings are OK, Click OK. That's 8.

It's a toss-up, isn't it? My preference is to understand the process and see what I'm doing at all stages.

I'm interested in why you'd want to paste into the same voice as the existing notes. Are you filling in gaps? Adding a layer to homophonic harmonies?
