Sib. 7.5: Staccato after a Fermata
Posted by Clifford Jones - 19 Jan 07:51PM
I'm running Sibelius 7.5.1. When I have a Staccato following a fermata (articulations) Sibelius does not play the staccato note properly. However, if I start play back over and play it through again, the second time through it is played properly. The real problem is that it never plays the staccato note correctly when the score is exported to an audio file.

Is this a known problem? Is there a solution?

Thanks,

CJ

Please attach a simple test case Sibelius .sib score file which demonstrates the issue, so that we can see what is happening.

It only happens in my large score. I copied a portion to another file and it worked ok. However, when I run the original score it does not play the staccato note correctly. If I use the transport function and back up without hitting stop and then let it play on, it plays the staccato correctly. However, hitting stop and start causes it to ignore the staccato articulation during play back.

I still have not been able to make the score play back correctly in the main score. If deleted it and re-entered with the same result. Generally, during play back if I hit "stop" after it has passed through the affected bar the first time (and not played it correctly)and back-up using the transport back up button it will play correctly the second time through. However, if I back up in front of the affected bar and then then click on the stop button in the transport ribbon and then begin play-back by clicking on the play button, it fails to play the staccato note correctly. It always plays the staccato incorrectly (as if the staccato wasn't there, you hear normal note duration) when I hit stop and then play with the cursor in front of the affected bar. Anybody have any suggestions?????

It's difficult to advise if we cannot see the actual score where the problem is happening.

May we assume that the score correctly has the fermatas reproduced at the same time-point in every staff?

Is the fermata within some kind of repeat or D/S structure? Or within a repeat you deleted but not quite entirely?

The fermatas are reproduced at the same time point in every staff? The fermata is not in a repeat or D/S structure. I did delete a repeat in other parts of the score, but not where the problem is. I tried deleting the fermatas, and the staccato still did not playback correctly. I went into the dictionary and changed the dwell time of the Fermata from 150% to 149% and that fixed the staccato play-back problem but created a dead zone for the notes following other fermatas in the score. AUGH!!! What is so frustrating, is that how can a change to the fermata definition affect how the score plays back when the fermatas had been deleted in that portion of the score. So something from the deleted fermatas is not getting deleted??? Still can't figure out why it doesn't work in my full score. I'd gladly send you a copy of the problem where the score isn't working properly, but it only screws-up in the full score, which is HUGE. I copied 4 measures, two before and two after, over into another file. I works perfectly there!!!!! I've tried deleting the affected bars and re-entering by hand, not copy and paste, but that doesn't work either!!!!! I'm out of ideas.

In the dictionary reset fermata duration to 150. I have no idea why 149 messes up other fermatas. Use the inspector to change the fermata in question. Select the note/ctrl+shift+I/tick Fermata/change 150 to 149.

Bob,

You nailed it. Your idea solved the problem. Many, many thanks!

You're welcome. Though you came up with most of the answer. I am finding the Inspector to be very useful in defining fermatas. Especially gaps afterwards.
