Sib. 7.5: piano and forte
Posted by Tombo - 10 Dec 07:52PM
I've made a lot of progress with Sibelius and have notated many songs in the short time I've owned it. But I still can't find how to add a simple expression like "piano" or "forte" to my song. Any suggestions? --Thanks!

Ctrl-E for Expression Text. Then, either R-click for the palette and choose f, p, ff, mp etc. or type Ctrl-F, Ctrl-P etc. (The Ctrl key produces the traditional bold italics. Without it, the plain text won't look right, but will still affect playback OK). Or, if you prefer, just type "forte", "piano". The more common terms will be recognised by playback.

Have you worked through the Tutorials, to be found in the Help section at the bottom of the File menu? Highly recommended for a beginner. There's too much in Sibelius to rely on intuition.

Select the note you want the dynamic to apply to--

then, on a Mac, type Command E, and without releasing the Command key, then type the dynamic you want--p, mf, etc.

This works really well!

Thanks Bob

FYI, if you have live playback turned on (Play tab), Sibelius will ignore your dynamic markings, using the information contained in the note input stage (i.e. if you played the notes in on a keyboard, it will use the touch data to playback rather than your written dynamics. If you input the notes from the computer, all notes will have the same volume so it will sound rather flat.)
