Sib. 7.1.3: Transposing Chord Symbols
Posted by marc - 17 Nov 05:34PM
Hey all,

I'm having trouble getting my chord symbols to transpose in a chart I'm arranging. Notes are transposing just fine but it's not grabbing the chord symbols and changing their key as it should. This worked fine for me in prior versions of Sibelius...anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Marc

P.S. File is attached if curious what I'm looking at.

Your chord symbols are in Technique Text. Replace them with Chord Symbols produced by pressing Ctrl-K then typing the name.

I don't think there is any method of direct conversion, and a brief search doesn't reveal a plugin. Maybe I'm wrong?

Hmm - this direct conversion works for me in Sib6...
(providing the existing 'chord symbols' are each separate pieces of Technique Text)
1. Select the passage containing the chord symbols to be converted [and if you have thereby selected any *other* text, filter for technique text - if not, you can omit this]
2. Go to the Properties Window (which is what I call your 'Inspector') and in the text tab, from the dropdown menu of text styles, choose Chord Symbol.
You end up with Legacy Chords.

Steve

I replied to this earlier, but the reply seems to have vanished.

I had essentially said the same thing as Steven. I note though that you do not need the Inspector at all, but the Ribbon Text tab to change the text style to Chord Symbol. Legacy chord symbols are just Text objects with the text style "Chord Symbol".

If you have any use for creating full chord symbol objects, rather than using legacy chords, you can install the plugin Convert Legacy Chord Symbols (in category Chord Symbols) and run it on the legacy chords.

In Sibelius 6, the Text Selector in Properties always shows the full list of Text Styles (although an attempt to change a Staff Text item to a System Text one fails). Technique to Chord Symbol is OK though.

But in Sibelius 7.5.1 the Text Style menu in the Text tab tries to be clever. With a Technique Text item selected, the choice doesn't seem to include Chord Symbol?

Though it was not really designed for this purpose, the downloadable plugin Swap or Replace Text Styles (category Text) gives you a less filtered set of text styles, and so will let you change Technique to Chord Symbol (see screenshot).

The plugin does restrict things so that system text only trades with system text, but staff text and lyrics styles can be mixed, with possible odd results on occasion.

As I recall, the plugin has a list of built-in text styles, and then it also adds in any text styles used in the score. So if you want to swap with a user-defined style, make sure it is used somewhere in the score (even if you have to fake it temporarily).
