Sib. 6.x: Glissando slide before note pointing up to target note
Posted by googoo - 30 Oct 09:32PM
Hello,

It there a way of making the Glissando line in Lines start to the left of a note?
I want to notate a general glissando from no specific starting note up to a specific note however when I try to add in the Glissando line from Lines after selecting the note I want it automatically goes to the right of the note, after the note.

Any suggestions?

Thanks you

You can add and hide a note before the note you want to gliss to, so all you will see is a gliss line going to the target note..and I think each gliss needs a specific starting and ending note, to be playable in Sib.

Thanks Bob

The automatic position is indeed after the note. But it's easily moved. If you want playback, you'll need a hidden note to define the start point. See attached screen shot.

Or the Scoop articulation may meet your needs. It even plays back in some instruments, in some sound sets. Not, I think in Sibelius 6 Sounds though, even if you choose "Jazz Trumpet".

Thank you for the replies.
The trouble I have with adding a hidden note in the previous bar is that the previous bar already has notes right to the end of the bar so to add a note would be to alter that bar which wouldn't make sense.

I am not so much concerned with playback but with the player reading a clear glissando line swooping up to a note.

Would simply writing gliss. before the notes suffice or is a line needed?

(I also have this concern with adding an arpeggio line in, for example, a piano piece where I want the arpeggiated chord to land on the beat so that it arpeggiation takes place just before - is there a standard way of notating this and can Sibelius do it?)

Thank you

On the example I attached, the gliss line will stay in position without the hidden note. It merely enables playback. If you want to use an anchor note, it can be in a different Voice to other, visible notes at the same position.

As a trombonist, I'd say the word gliss can be omitted, but the line is essential to indicate whether it's a gliss up or down.
