One of my students has sent me this (attached). Can't say I've seen tremolos written across bar-lines in any theory book, yet they look fine to me and Sib plays them OK. What's the verdict?

FWIW, although I find no explicit prohibition in Gardner Read's book, I don't find any example showing a cross-bar tremolo.

More to the point, it seems to me that in rehearsal ("let's take it from bar 33, and…" ) that anyone trying to follow this notation is going to need a good fraction of a second longer to find his or her place.

So I'd not recommend your student's shortcut. If said student (and you) are still enamored of it, he or she should go to the first rehearsal with an open mind and be prepared to, if necessary, edit and print out new parts in time for the second rehearsal.

I would agree with Peter. There is really no need for the tremolos to cross bar-lines here. I would simply put two minims (half-notes) in each bar and run a slur across every two bars. In any case I think slurs are needed in the version proposed originally otherwise it does not make a whole lot of musical sense.
