Sib. 7.5: Is it possible to have the Slur Above always above?
Posted by André van Haren - 29 Oct 10:04AM
In the lines panel there is a slur above and a slur below version, but they still jump on either side of a staff depending on where the note heads are. Is there a way to leave them above or below the staff no matter what

I wish!!! I've asked for this countless times, Richard. Slurs are the only articulation you can't force to be 'always above', necessary for easy reading. You get it right (manual flipping) in the score. It goes wrong in the transposed parts. More manual flipping.

Than I don't understand why there is a slur above and slur below version. It would be great if this could be adjusted as so many other lines etc in Sibelius.

Another thing that makes no sense, Richard, is that the short-cut for slur-above is S and slur-below is Shift/S, but whichever one you choose, Sib decides on its position.

> slur-below is Shift/S

This hasn't been the case for some time. In current versions, Sibelius ships with "Shift-S" defined to be "End slur" (for terminating sticky slur input).

Ah, thanx Robin. The old is still attached to my personal key-press configurations. Must admit, I never use Shift/S. Guess I discovered long ago that it did exactly the same as S on its own.

In the old days, before Magnetic Slurs, you had to always choose which slur to use when attaching it to notes. So for the most part, I think that Magnetic Slurs are timesaving devices.

You can still create non-magnetic slurs, and up and down are respected for those. You need to start with no notes selected, then choose a slur from the Lines menu. Choose a down slur and then click on the note where you want it to start.

These will show up in red when you select them. I don't remember the details of these anymore, but it might be useful for you in this situation.

The Reference says this about non-mag slurs:

"Non-magnetic slurs

Although not recommended except for special circumstances, you can also create less intelligent “non-magnetic” slurs by creating a slur with nothing selected with the mouse from the Notations > Line gallery. Non-magnetic slurs don’t snap to notes, and nor do they avoid collisions with notes, beams, accidentals, articulations etc., but they can be useful in some situations.

Non-magnetic slurs appear in red (with a red frame and red handles) when selected, as a hint that you should probably use a magnetic one instead.

If you use Appearance > Design and Position > Reset Position (shortcut Ctrl+Shift+P or xXP) to reset the position of a slur, this also turns it into a magnetic slur if it was non-magnetic."

Bob - thanks! I knew it was possible to do but didn't work it out. Thanks :)

In general, though, non magnetic slurs are much less useful than magnetic ones if there is a likelihood of pitches changing - the magnetic ones will follow the changes, the non magnetic ones mostly will not.

I think I spend most of my input time flipping slurs to above notes and staff, and when I have achieved it in the score I have to do it all over again in the transposed parts. The preferred position of all other articulation can be automated in this respect, so why not slurs?
