Sib. 7.1.3: How to hange time signature without changing the music
Posted by Øystein Sevåg - 26 Oct 03:06PM (edited 26 Oct 03:27PM)
Almost finished with an orchestral movement here, I see that a part of my music would have been easier to read rhythmically if I had used 5/8 ts in stead of 3/4.

Coming form LogicPro it seems is surprisingly complicated to do this kind of changes in Sibelius. When I change time sig in the first bar of the actual passage, it just adds a rest at the end of the bar and leaves the following bars as they were.

How can I change time sig without changing the music. In other words: How can I "respell bar lines", which is what I actually want.

Thanks for help!

Insert a "stopper" 3/4 at the end of the passage you want to change to 5/8, then, WITH NOTHING SELECTED, click the 5/8 into the first bar.

It sounds as if you have one bar selected when you add the 5/8. That will apply it to only that bar.

Alternatively, select the WHOLE passage that needs to change and click in the new signature to the first highlighted bar. No need for a "stopper" then.

Thanks Lawrence!
The only thing that needs to be done now, is to change bar 194 to be 4/4 (not 3/4), so that the first beat in the first 5/8 bar (bar 195) is the notes that now is the 2nd. quarter note in bar 195.
What is the easiest way to do that?

Use the Split Bar plugin to split off the first two eights as a 1/4 bar. Then the Merge Bars plugin to join it to the preceding bar. Then re-apply the 5/8 as previously described.

If things get complicated at the change-over region, it can sometimes be quicker to Insert a couple of new bars of the sizes you want, re-enter the notes, then System-select the messy bars and press Delete.

For better help, if required, please attach the sib file, not just a picture of a tiny part of it.

Im not sure what you actually want--

With my understanding of what you want, Id select the fourth 16th note in bar 195 and use the plugin Draw Free Rhythm Barline.(Category: Composing Tools)

That should give you a bar of 1/4 (and one of 3/8)--I would then select bars 194 and 195 and use the Merge bars plugin (Category: Layout)to merge them in a 4/4 measure--this will be bar 194 now.

and the next bar (195) will already be 3/8, from the above.

Im not sure this is what you mean, and others may have different, maybe possibly easier ways of doing it..this works for me.

Thanks Bob

Thanks again Lawrence, that worked well.
And Bob, I'll try the Draw free Rhytm Barline soon, might be a good tool for me too.
