Sib. 7.1.3: Odd playback problem
Posted by Patrick O'Keefe - 24 Oct 10:18PM (edited 24 Oct 10:20PM)
Please forgive me if this is a duplicate posting. It seems like I've already asked this, but I can't find it.

Sometimes when I (try to) stop playback by clicking on the Stop button in the Transport panel, playback continues for several seconds. The green playback line stops moving even though playback continues. Once playback stops the playback line jumps past the last note played. (I'm not completely sure of that last statement.) A couple of times I continues to click on the Stop button and briefly got a "Not responding" message displayed in the Transport panel's Title bar. During this delay, playback continues with no problem.

Could this be related to delays reading the .sib file? That makes no sense to me, but my music files are on a networked drive, and I recently had to move that networked drive off of a gigabit ethernet connection to a very slow "PowerLine" (i.e., ethernet over home power wiring) connection. The playback problem started happening around that time. I'm suspicious of coincidences like that, but I cannot think of a way that a delay in reading the .sib file would keep playback from stopping.

With the use of NotePerformer the playback continues a short while.

Don't sib files have to be loaded into Sibelius? Shouldn't make any difference where they are stored. Or did I miss something?

Maybe Autosave is trying to do its stuff to a slowly accessed location?

Hmm. And that might slow down processing input from the Transport panel but not interfere with playback itself? Odd, but possible.

That's what is stumping me also on this. Maybe Robin could chime in here with his experience?

I keep my Scores folder on one networked computer, accessed from another using the Windows Offline Files feature. It isn't a faultless system, but it suits me.

When the network goes slow, as networks do, I can be stuck in a "not responding" for quite some time when I perform the Ctrl-S reflex (in many programs, not just in Sibelius). A little patience, the system times-out on the network access and decides to store in the local cache.

I could probably fix this with a little research. But when it starts playing silly-b***ers in this way, I usually just nip into Network Connections, R-click the network adapter and disable it.

It seems to me that the original poster, Patrick, is best placed to perform experiments to answer the question whether his current networking arrangements are causing his observed issue.

The best that the rest of us can do is speculate, as we do not have comparable set-ups.

Off-topic to this thread: everything I have heard about PowerLine Telecommunications has been bad, particularly for the neighbours of PLT users.

Unfortunately, I (the original poster) do not have enough knowledge of the internal workings of Sibelius. I, too, am limited to speculation.

I have experienced that situations mentioned by Laurence, but do not understand how the network slowdowns can cause the particular problem I'm experiencing - playback proceeding with no apparent problem, but an attempt to stop playback getting delayed. (I cannot be certain about the playback line stopping. I'm usually not looking at the score at that point - I'm looking at the Transport panel to make sure I've actually hit Stop.)

I'd be using WiFi instead of PowerLine but my wireless access point is limited to wireless G - too slow. Some time next week I'm upgrading my access point (part of a DSL modem) to one that supports N and will stop using the PowerLine adapters.

I have no idea if the PowerLine adapters available in the US are the same as those from PLT, or if they use the same standards. Surprisingly, "PowerLine" does not seem to be a registered trademark in the US; several unrelated companies market devices with "PowerLine" in their name or description. Perhaps they are all licensed users of the original PowerLine technology, but I can find nothing stating that. I hope I'm not causing my neighbors problems.

You don't need to know anything about Sibelius. Just do the experiment with replacing the slow network with a faster one, and see whether your problem goes away.

Or, store some Sibelius files on the local PC instead of the network, and see whether the problem goes away when editing the local stored copies.

The problem is too intermittent for such experiments to tell me very much. And my real (completely academic) question is "How is Sibelius designed such that processing of the Transport panel is hung while processing of playback continues?". I assume this is all related to slow disk access and will miraculously clear up when I can return the drive to its gigabit ethernet lan segment. But I'd like to know HOW it's related to slow disk access. I don't expect to find out, but I'd still like to know. :-)
