Sib. 7.5: What have I done?
Posted by John Bird - 24 Oct 08:27PM (edited 24 Oct 08:28PM)
I am working away producing a simple score when the 2 bars suddenly separate and leave a gap,and starts a new stave see pic. I did not mean to do it so what have I done to cause this and how can I eliminate the gap?

You've been dragging bar lines. Select the bar line after the gap and do Lay-out > Reset Position

The moral of the story is - don't drag barlines! If you want to resize bars, use [shift][alt]<- or [shift][alt]->.

Yes Thanks that's a good tip and there is more fine control than using the mouse

Not so much finer control as doing something completely different!

Well I use to drag notes and bar lines with the mouse and now I use the shift alt and arrow keys, left and right and it's much better for me to have this much finer control. I do not now get into a mess with those gaps:)

If you have a note spacing problem, first select the passage and apply Reset Note Spacing. If there's still a problem, see if you're trying to force too many (or two few) bars onto a line. Rethink the Line Break positions. If you REALLY need that many bars on one line maybe you should reduce the Staff Size a bit rather than forcing a cramped layout? Only as a last resort attempt to compress or expand Sibelius' natural note spacing.

OK thanks I had not previously used the reset note spacing so I will try that tip instead of trying to do it manually.

It is always better IMHO to start from a position where Sibelius has been allowed to do its thing. Then you can decide whether you like what it has done and change it - or not.

Just remember that "its thing" includes YOU routinely clicking Reset Note Spacing (and maybe some of the other Resets) after a note editing session. And that some of the Auto Layout defaults, particularly in Parts, are probably not what you'd choose.
