I do a lot of jazz 'lead sheet' writing. At times it may be desirable to remove completely a number of empty bars within a stave to save space. An example would be, in a 2 stave (treble and bass) lead sheet, removing the bass stave for an 8 bar middle section, the stave not being needed as the info will be shown by the chord sequence placed above the treble clef melody line. I have tried 'hiding' following the 'save trees' instructions, but even this simply does not work. I imagine that this must be a big problem for large scores. Has anybody been able to crack this one?

If Hide Empty Staves doesn't work, it means there's still something attached or there's information on the staff, for example a four beat rest instead of a bar rest. You can select the passage to be hidden, do Delete or Home > Hide and then apply Hide Empty Staves again.

Does not respond to 'hide empty staves' even when I put the bass line on another separate stave and manually eliminate all rests. And pressing delete just brings the rests back again.

Make sure you have selected the entire [empty] line you want to hide (or a passage which entirely contains it), before you try 'Hide Empty Staves'.

And you don't need to "manually eliminate all the rests" before doing this, but there must be no content (apart from centred whole-bar rests) in the stave you want to hide.
