Sib. 7.1.3: Posting the swing notation equivalence at top of score
Posted by abr88 - 23 Oct 05:07PM
When I write music out and want the "swing thing" I usually write at the top this time-honored message: open parens, pair of eighth notes, equals sign, quarter note + eighth note triplet, close parens.

I know I can put that on the top of the score (where tempo goes) as text, but it doesn't actually "enforce" it in playback (for that a "swing" "rhythmic feel" has to be specified).

Seems there should be (and I'm hoping there is) a way to plop a prefabricated instruction to that effect at the top, producing the desired result both visibly and playback-wise.

Thanks for any help.

Yup. And, believe it or not, it's the word "Swing" in Tempo Text. Both Sibelius and live players understand it perfectly. Save Metric Modulations for where there IS a Metric Modulation - a non-obvious transfer of pulse between one section of music to the next.

"Swing", by the way, IS the time-honoured message. Metric Modulations were (probably) invented by Elliott Carter around 1950. Swing had been going long before that!

I suppose it's only fair to tell you that Metric Modulation text CAN have a playback effect, if the string you use is defined in the Playback Directory. See attached. (I think it was the same back in Sibelius 7.1.3?)

Click where you want it to go, and choose Text Tab>Styles>Metric Modulations--and from the contextual menu that appears when you Control-Click (On a Mac), on the blinking insertion point, simply choose what you want.

Pls see attachment.

Thanks Bob

Nope, no metric mod text in 7.1.3 playback dictionary, but "Swing" is, and that's all a player needs to see.

PS. I beg your pardon. Is "qs i=qapa asq" some kind of metric modulation? Doesn't seem to translate into music text.

Pl see

http://www.sibeliusblog.com/news/norfolk-suite-updated/

Using Opus metronome text it translates to 2 16ths=an eight and sixteenth triplet.

Pls see attachment

Thanks Bob

Yup. That's how we had to struggle with Metronome Mark Text, and I don't think it was even ever properly documented.

The current Sibelius version makes it a little more friendly.
