Sib. 7.5: Recreate full score
Posted by Serendipity - 17 Oct 05:38PM
I have all the separate parts as individual Sibelius files and I want to recreate a full score from them. I have created a blank full score with all the instruments listed.

However, if I try to copy one of the parts into the (new) full score, I get the warning message 'the score you are pasting from has a different number of stave (etc)...'.

How can I do this?

I have a horrible feeling it's obvious, but I can't see it (and I'm very pushed for time!) so I'd be grateful for some pointers.

Thanks

Andrew Harvey

The first instrument should be copy/pasted as a System Selection. Make it the top instrument in the full score. This will copy across the structure of the score - key signatures, time signatures, repeats etc. Once the structure is established, subsequent instruments should be normal selections, pasting just the notes.

You may find it convenient to use one part file as the basis of the full score. Add another instrument stave, copy/paste into its empty bars. Then the next...

If you encounter NO problems with missing bars, incorrect transpositions etc. it'll be a first! Fingers crossed...

If any parts lack a note on beat 1, bar 1, it can be useful to add a dummy one before pasting across. It ensures you paste into exactly the right place.

From the sound of it, you were trying to append the parts to each other. It doesn't work like that. Appending is for adding movements together (for example.)

Laurence's suggestion is a good one. If the number of parts was reasonable and you had plenty of RAM, I would consider starting as Laurence suggests, but have all the parts and the score open at once. Then, one-by-one, copy the notes from each part into the score. Once you have checked that each part has copied into the right place, close that open part down. That way, you won't miss any parts and if there is an error you won't have the hassle of keep reopening the parts.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions. I've done as Laurence suggested - I'd confused making a system selection with simply selecting notes. Of course, as I'm sure you can imagine, there are other problems. The first of which it that when I save a selection of notes from a part to paste into the full score, the sextuplets in the part become simple quavers when pasted. Any thoughts on what's causing that or how to get around it?

Thanks again

Andrew

I can envisage a sextuplet group taking on the default beam grouping of the new score and becoming two triplets. But it's odd that they'd become straight quavers.

If you want issues such as this sorted out, I think you'll need to attach the sib files involved so we can see just what's going on.

When you say "save a selection of notes" I'm wondering if you're trying to do the copy/paste piecemeal? OK, Select All won't work, it gives a System Selection. But a triple-click in the first bar of a Part will select all notes from beginning to end.

A triple click in ANY bar will select that whole staff from start to finish.

Indeed. Doing it in the first bar might remind you to Paste it into the first bar of the target score though!

Ok - I've done as you suggested (for which thanks!) and I'm attaching two bits of file. One - Flute 1 and 2 test is a file with the 1st flute part and a space beneath for the 2nd flute part. Also attached is the 2nd flute part, 'Flute 2 test'. If I select the 2nd flute part (using triple click) then paste into the Flute 1 and 2 test file, the 2nd flute part loses its sextuplets (I could live with it converting them to two lots of triplets!).

So again - what am I doing wrong???

Thanks

Andrew

Here's the 2nd Flute part (how do you attach two files to the same post??)

Edit the post, each time you need to attach something else.

Thanks Bob

The notes in "Flute 2 test.sib" aren't sextuplets. The first bar is actually 5/4. The following bars are 4/4, and contain precisely enough 8ths to fill the bar - not enough tor sextuplets. The numbers 6 are Technique Text.

I suspect these parts came via PhotoScore, and you didn't completely deal with all timing errors BEFORE moving them into Sibelius.

If everything except these sextuplet groups are OK - in the separate Part file re-apply the key signature at the beginning, take care of the resulting mess, add the sextuplet notes manually and try again. Or go back to PhotoScore, re-read the page and deal with the errors.

Yet again, thanks for your reply. The scores were actually converted into MusicXML from pdf files by PdftoMusic. I think that this could take me a horribly long time!

The trick when converting is to know when to give up! It looks as if a great deal of the Part has converted OK in to Sibelius. Paste the good sections across to your new Score. Enter the problem sections manually. It won't take THAT long.
