Sib. 7.5: 1st and 2nd Ending Problem
Posted by Peter G. Rockas - 15 Oct 07:48PM (edited 15 Oct 11:44PM)
My score just continues to repeat the first ending and not go onto the second. In score #1), I removed the hook on the first ending for aesthetic reasons and noticed that it wasn't playing as it should.

I copied and pasted into a new score, #2), and used the first ending with hook. This didn't work either.

Where am I going wrong? It's happened before a few times and doing a copy/past to a new score always worked.

Peter

I don't know why yours doesn't work, but I deleted your brackets, inserted new ones and it worked. See attached (you'll have to re-import your House Style - you used a whole LOT of non-standard fonts).

Hi Laurence,
I'll have to update before I open you file. When you say "bracket" do you mean the repeats?

Back again Laurence. Strange behavior. Sorry for the length but I wanted to be thorough.

First of all, you must be using a beta 7.5 since I get the message that I have the current version at 7.1.3.

I opened my original score with the default hook on the 1st ending. Then I removed and re-entered the 1st ending and it didn't work. I then removed and re-entered the ending repeat bar and it worked.

With the same score, I edited the default 1st ending removing by the hook. It work. When I closed and reopened the score with hookless 1st ending it didn't work even though the default 1st ending was without hook.

Am I misunderstanding the 1st and 2nd ending system somehow?

To make the hookless copy of the 1st ending, I went into Notations>Edit Lines and selected the default 1st ending (with hook) and selected New. I kept everything the same and just selected None to remove the hook. My assumption was that it's a 1st ending copy without a hook, so it should function as a 1st ending.

Making a copy of the default ending didn't work but what did work once, was edit the default 1st ending and removing the hook.

So I learned the following.

1) If I make a hookless 1st ending I have to edit the default instead of making a copy of the default without hook. And this only will work for the specific score for which I do this.

2) Sometimes I have to delete and reenter ending repeat bars to get the 1st ending to work.

Is this the way it's supposed to work? (I hope this make sense;o)

Thanks

Well, your message header DID say Sibelius 7.5, and it's been the current version since July! But you've done exactly what I suggested - delete both ending brackets and redo them.

Many Line types have attributes and behaviours that aren't editable. When there IS a stock one that does what you want, I think it's best to use it.

It's also quite important that the brackets over 1x and 2x endings cover exactly the right passages of music. I see you like to butt them right together. This may cause problems. A slight gap is the usual notation.

Whoops, you're right Laurence, I did enter 7.5. Lost track of what I had. Sorry for the confusion. Thank you for your input though, helpful advice. Got it working now with the default endings.
