Hi.
In the reference book, concerning a VST instrument to play samples (.sf2-files), we are referred to a link at Cakewalk to get the free player: http://www.cakewalk.com/Download/sfz.aspx). Clicking on that link will show us, that this Cakewalk offer does not exist any more. Searching for the VST Instrument there returns the result
The player seems much enhanced comparing to the version we know of previous Sonar versions. It is still free, it seems.
NOW MY QUESTION, please:
How can I let Sibelius 7.5. recognize that VST player?
In the reference book it says, the VST dll must be placed in \program files\Avid\... But I do not see that folder in C:\. I have got "Program Data" and "Programs", and "Programs x86", but also there I do not get to any folder for "Avid" nor sibelius to acc that VST-plugin.
I am happy to see that Sibelius accepts quartertones. My great wish would be that the Sibelius Player accepts microtonal tunings created by "Scala".
Please see:
http://www.huygens-fokker.org/scala/downloads.html With that program it is not only possible to refer to a bundle of over 4,000. tunings, you can, with a little instruction, create one of your own.
But it is hard to transfer the retuned files to Sibelius.
Instruments like Modartt's Pianoteq accept those tunings automatically, if you select the desired tuning in a special menu.
Great wish, I admit.
Thanks, but my question is still open, please:
How can I let Sibelius 7.5. recognize that VST player?
In the reference book it says, the VST dll must be placed in \program files\Avid\... But I do not see that folder in C:\. I have got "Program Data" and "Programs", and "Programs x86", but also there I do not get to any folder for "Avid" nor sibelius to add that VST-plugin.
Please date me up.
Thanks, Robin,
I'll check tonight. I am not sure right now if that plug in is really only 32bit, I should be able to find out, shouldn't I?
And yes, my Win 7 is in German.
I posted that "Scala Tuning" to "Ideascale" yesterday evening: I find it so ingenious that with Modartt's Pianoteq, I just select the mixrotuning I wish, and I do not even have to "retune the MIDI file" via "Scala" tuning software: The selected tuning is being played "live", so I even can connect a MIDI Keyboard to my system, play on it and find my chords.
Apparently I cannot find out if SFZ is 64 bit or 32 bit: There is only the DLL I have to copy, and I do not see any information on 64 or 32 bit.
And: When I go to "Programs"\AVID\ I do not see any folder called VSTplugins, be it in the folder "programs", or in the folder "Programs x86". No trace. What went wrong, please?
For quite some pieces I NEED a working .sf2 player, because I got some samples of exotic instruments I cannot apply otherwise.
Or could you recommend any other fine .sf2 player, please?
I will assume that sfz, being an old application, is 32-bit. Therefore, you will not be able to use it with 64-bit Sibelius.
Please launch the 32-bit version of Sibelius, go to the Play tab, click:
Setup (dialogue launcher) -> Playback Devices -> click button "Audio Engine Options" -> click button "Folders"
From the window that opens, copy the contents of the text box into a follow-up post. Or, take a screen-shot of the window, and attach that.
Then we shall see where the VST folder is on a German Windows.

Sibelius 7.5.1/7.1.3/6.2/5.2.5, PhotoScore Ult 7.0.2, Dolet 6.3 for Sibelius, Windows 7 32-bit SP1, 4GB RAM
I'll check. Thanks. It seems, by default, I launch the 64bit version, since when I see the available instruments in the player menu, the sfz remains gray.
I am still trying to find out how to launch the 32bit version. Well. I found in the folder "Programme (x86)"\Avid\Sibelius 7.5 the ".exe" and linked that by right click to my task bar. However, clicking on this icon resulted in an error message "Sibelius 7.5 does not work anymore and had bo be closed. You will be notified when a solution is available." (I was translating that message from German to English by myself. The original text might be different, but I hope you get it anyway.)
Apparently this is not the workaround Sib 7.5 expects in case I want the 32-bit version to be launched.
Thank you for your interest and your help.
Thanks, problem is the same. I see the initialisation of playlist, and then the error message appears.
Here is my "Start list" as jpeg. Maybe from there you can tell if something is wrong.
It is possible that Sibelius is being brought down by an incompatible installed VST. Please uninstall any 32-bit VSTs that you have installed, and try Sibelius 32-bit again.
If the crash persists, then click:
Start -> All Programs -> Avid -> Sibelius 7.5 -> Sibelius 7.5 User Data
- In the folder that opens, open sub-folder PlogueEngine;
- if any of the following files exist, please open them into NotePad and copy and paste their text contents into a follow-up post:
- PlogueEngine.log
- vst.cache
- vst_filter.cache
- vstfilelist.cache

Sibelius 7.5.1/7.1.3/6.2/5.2.5, PhotoScore Ult 7.0.2, Dolet 6.3 for Sibelius, Windows 7 32-bit SP1, 4GB RAM
Problem solved.
I made the same mistake as many others before.
How I managed it:
A) Launch Sibelius 64bit.
1) Opened playback properties.
2) Clicked "Audio Engine options"
3) at "Virtual instruments and effects": entered all folders in which I previously had installed any VSt-Plugins.
For orientation, see attached jpeg.
I do not have to launch Sib 7 in the 32bit version at all. All plugins I wish did appear. They are all genuinely 64 bit.
How I came to this?
By checking the sound libraries following the manual for Sib 7 Sounds (See entry http://www.sibelius.com/cgi-bin/helpcenter/chat/chat.pl?com=thread&start=663356&groupid=3&). Then I had the idea as described.
