Heard on TV
Posted by Adrian Drover - 29 Sep 06:36PM
Just heard one of (Sib. user) Derek Bourgeois' compositions on the One Show (U.K). Can't remember what it's called, only that it starts in 11/8 time with a few other irregulars thrown in for good measure. Beautiful piece! Put me out of my misery someone, please.

I have no idea if this is what was on One Show, but his Serenade for Band seems to be in 11/8 (3-3-2-3). Very nice piece.

Apparently, he wrote it for his wedding. I love playing it. There's a great Brass Band version. Not many bands can handle the 11/8 and 13/8.

Yup. I wrote it for organ in February 1965 when still a student at the Royal College of Music in London. I showed it to Herbert Howells, my composition tutor. His only comment was "I love pop music."
I was getting married later that same year, and the instructions from my bride to be were: It must be in a time that nobody could get into step with thereby avoiding a march like procession and it must be so cheerful that nobody in the church would start blubbing as people tend to do at weddings. I guess I must have succeeded because it's still being played today.

I've played it only once in concert band on tuba many years ago. A beautiful piece of music, Derek, and so easy to play despite its unusual meter. I heard just a few measures of it on BBC TV yesterday as background to a report from Yorkshire (hence played by brass band, dunno which). Probably too few measures for you to collect royalties. Funny that I should remember the composer and mostly 3,3,2,3 meter, yet not the title.

I originally called it Wedding March, but OUP asked me to make a small orchestra version and suggested the title 'Serenade' to make the work have a wider performance appeal. There are now also published versions for Brass Band and Wind Band. The small orchestral version went out of print decades ago, and the organ version has never been published. This is because the publisher of the wind and brass band version now owns the copyright to every version of the work, so nobody else can publish the original organ version, but if anybody thinks to ask them they will print off an organ copy for any organist that asks for it. I spend ages every year referring enquiring organists to the publisher, but I suspect that there are thousands more 'illegal' photocopies in circulation in organ lofts around the world.
I also wrote organ music for the wedding signing of the register and the post wedding procession, but these have never seen the light of day since 1965!

Actually I've used both of the other organ pieces I wrote for my wedding in other works so they haven't been wasted.
I used the registry signing music in a violin sonata and the processional in the finale of my first Tuba Concerto.

It was played on Radio 3 this morning just after 8.00. Delightful.
