I've added string parts to an existing choral score. The expression text and dynamics in the strings parts are defaulting to above the stave, not below, as if they too were choral parts. Where is the setting to change this? I've looked through the Text>Styles>Expression menu and not seeing it there. Looking through the user manual there are references to expression text going above for choral music and below for instrumental music but I'm not finding how to change the settings for it. I recall finding it in earlier versions of Sibelius. How is this setting changed? Any thought on why it is defaulting above and not below?
Try selecting the Lyric you're using and under Text tab see which type of Lyric you're using.
Go to:
Appearance>Design and Postion>Default Postions (select the little SE pointing arrow).
Select the Lyric you're using in the left-hand column and in the bottom left of the Window under "Creating Text" are Radio Buttons for "Above Top of Staff" and "Below Bottom" of Staff.
(See screenshot.)
Choose which one you want . . . and then in the Score, filter the Lyrics and Reset Position.
Shift and Command (Ctrl on Windows) + "P" is the Keyboard Shortcut for Reset Position.
Are your string staves actually cleanly-created new ones, from the Add Instruments page, or might they have been derived from the existing choral staves with Instrument Changes applied?
My experience too. If you have added the string parts from the Instrument list, the expressions, technique etc all go to the correct notational position.
Thanks for all the replies. Yes, they are newly created staves. I don't see where there is an option to change this in the Instrument definition. I followed Appearance>Design & Position and saw that Expression was set to "Above middle of staff". I've changed it to "Below middle" and Below bottom", nothing changes. Starting a new score from scratch works correctly. I don't know what it is about this score that it isn't. I'll try copying and pasting into a new score if it doesn't fix.
Hopefully no need to ..I'll try copying and pasting into a new score if it doesn't fix. because once you've realigned the lyrics as Richard suggests, all will fall into place.
The lyrics are not the problem, it's the expression marks in the instrument parts that are in the wrong place. The edit instruments screen does not have the vocal score option selected, see attached. It's set correctly as far as I can tell. The parts are created fresh.
The expression text is going above the staff because, in Appearance -> Design and Position -> Default Positions, Expression text is configured to be 4 spaces "Above middle of the staff", which is not the Sibelius default setting (5 spaces below middle of the staff).
I cannot be sure what other non-default settings there might be in this score, so I suggest that a standard Sibelius House Style should be imported into this score, so as to restore all default settings.

Hi, the expression text appears above, regardless of how it is set. I didn't realize the one I attached previously was saved with it set above. I had already tried all settings and it didn't matter how it was set, it always appears above. I've reattached it, saved as set for below but still appearing above. Why is that?
In any case, subsequent to this, importing the standard Sibelius House Style fixed it. Thanks for the help!
