Sib. 7.5: Video export failed
Posted by David Hitchin - 25 Sep 10:31PM
I am running version 7.5.1, build 209. I have been able to export some scores to video (for teaching purposes), but my last few attempts have failed.

The progress bar shows that audio is being exported, but as soon as it moves to video, the message comes up 'Video export failed.'

It does this with both the 32-bit and the 64-bit versions. I have been using playback line on, texture off, and selected instruments. It fails regardless of whether I have chosen low or high definition output.

A sample file is attached.

Any suggestions, please?

Try eliminating the double-barline at the end of bar 18.

Thank you, Robin; after removing the double bar line it worked. I haven't a clue why that line killed the process, nor how you knew that this could cause the problem.

My guess is that since you don't have a final bar ending, Sibelius assumes that the double-bar is the end.

Actually I discovered another reason. The first note of my piece has a fermata. Once I erased that, it exported fine. Strange. Even stranger that there is a fermata showing in all the bar rests but I guess it is the note itself that's tripping up the export.

Hmmm...the mystery deepens. I have a piece that has two final barlines (one for each movement). Oddly enough, the video export worked fine.

It seems that the issue is with the properties of the barline. Even after I delete the "section break" icons, it still did not export until I went in and removed it from the properties (it was still there after I delete the icons).

Video export is a very useful feature for teaching purposes, and the only reason that I paid Avid for the upgrade, but it is very buggy; sometimes it works and sometimes it fails, and the reasons for failure, if they can be found, seem very odd. They are not always easy to track down.

Is there any hope of Avid patching this before we are asked to pay for version 8 at some time in the distant future?

And now another oddity!

When anything fails, the logical approach is to try to isolate the fault. So, with a failed export, I cut the score into halves, and save them as separate files, then trying to export each. The halves could be split again repeatedly until something works, and the offending section is closely identified.

Unfortunately, it seems that once a video export has failed, every subsequent one fails as well. So, I try reloading Sibelius - no better - so restart the computer - no better.

So, after a computer restart I tried again on a small file which had exported successfully before, and I repeated exactly the same process, apart from changing the output file name - and it failed this time.

After looking for a logical solution, I can only conclude that video export has had a curse put on it

Next step, I'll try on another machine to see if that makes any difference.

The mystery deepens.

I started on my usual desktop, Windows 7 64-bit with 6 GB of RAM, Sibelius 7.5.1.
File 1 was a short piano piece (3 lines) which had exported OK but now fails, and has not been changed since it worked.
File 2 was a long organ piece which once exported OK, but has been changed and now fails.

I moved them to my laptop, Windows 7 64-bit with 4 GB of RAM, where I installed Sibelius 7.5.1 and the sound library (a long process).

File 1 failed.

File 2 exported OK.

So there seems something random about the pattern of success and failure.

Fortunately I now have enough video for my next lecture.
