Sib. 7.1.3: layout problems
Posted by John Carbon - 24 Sep 05:05PM
Hello, I'm formatting a piano-vocal score and using "hide empty staves" to save paper. Fairly often I end up with a page that has only two systems on it but they aren't big enough to fill the page without either having one system pushed to the bottom of the page and the other near the top, or both near the top. Something seems to prevent dragging them to the most evenly spaced positions to "fill the page." If I use the shift drag option there is still only so much I can do. The bottom system can be dragged down a little but it sudden;y jumps to the bottom, too far away from the top staff creating a page with a big gap in the middle. These situations are followed by pages in which one system truly fills the page (because more voices are singing at that point). What I would like to do is drag the systems and staves to wherever I think they look best on the page. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, John

Go into engraving rules (cmd+shift+e), then select 'staves', where you will find the option to 'justify staves', change the default setting to 100%. You should then be able to position staves as you want.

Hope that works for you.

Is this at the end or in the middle? If it's in the middle, then I would suggest turning off the auto page breaks. These can be a real bugger of a nuisance!

When this happens in my scores, I go to Page Layout; Undo Format and then adjust the staff size while observing the layout on the pages shown in the box at the bottom right ( especially the last page).
Occasionally, where there is a gap produced (as in your example), by dragging the top stave (system) towards the top of the page, that page is then filled and the problem is solved.

The sudden jumping is caused by the pourcentage set in Staves > Justification. If your page is, say, 50% filled with two systems and you drag down the second system it fills up over 65% and then justification comes in: the two systems are 'spread' over the page from top to bottom. With two systems only this may give awkward results.
Changing the pourcentage to 100% is a solution, but then you'll have no justification at all.

My advice is to add at least some empty staves, for example singers who are joining in the next page, simply to fill up nicely.

If you want more precisions, please attach your file.
