Sib. 7.5: NotePerformer and Accordion sounds
Posted by Serendipity - 13 Sep 10:38AM
I'm writing a piece for soprano sax and accordion using 7.5.1 and the latest NotePerformer. I was a bit unhappy with the accordion sounds, then today I discovered there are actually six! However, the way I found them was through the mixer. So the question is - how do I use the different sounds for playback in the score, and can I use different sounds for r.h. and l.h. ?

Finally, with dynamics, they only seem to work when I put them below the l.h. stave. I know that (unlike the piano) the accordion can't vary the dynamics between the hands, but it seems odd. Is this a Sibelius, NotePerformer or me issue?

Thanks

Andrew Harvey

Hi Andrew!

NotePerformer has different samples for left and right hand, and also allows you to vary the stops (high/low or both) for left and right hand separately for the Accordion.

There's also a bandoneon, and chances are the built-in Accordion instrument definition in Sibelius will default to that when using NotePerformer.

As you noticed, you need to assign all these sounds via the mixer to make sure you're getting exactly the sound you want, because NotePerformer has many more accordion variations than is defined in Sibelius.

But first, open Playback Preferences in Sibelius, and make sure that the two checkboxes starting with "Use same slot..." are NOT selected. If these are selected, grand staff instruments will use the same sound for both staves even if you don't want that. This means they will always have the same sound, and you cannot vary the dynamics separately even if you wanted to. This is not related to what playback device you have.

However if you set your preferences as described above, when you add an accordion grand staff you should be able to assign different sounds to left/right hands from the mixer.

With older scores you have it could still be the case that the left/right hands use the same slot/MIDI channel. In which case you need to add a new accordion grand staff and copy the music over to the new one (triple-click to select the entire staff).

Hi Arne,

Many thanks for your helpful reply. I certainly didn't know about the 'Use same slot..' - that explains problems I was having a while ago with different dynamics for each hand in some piano music.

My only remaining question, is - given that there are several 'stops' for each hand for the NotePerformer accordion, is it possible to change the stops during the course of the score - no accordion player would be likely to use the same sounds throughout.

It's possible, but it requires creating your own instrument definitions in Sibelius, and set these to the use the different stops in NotePerformer as their default sound.

Then you can switch stops in the middle of the score using an "Instrument change" (which you can hide, if you don't want it to show in the score) to to your own defined accordion instruments.

Are there demos of the different accordion sounds in Noteperformer?

Mmm - sounds a bit long-winded. Can it not be done with MIDI control codes (not that I've ever used them but I suspect it might be easier)?
