Sib. 7.5: Fermat add gap question
Posted by WoodyS - 26 Aug 07:40PM
I was wondering if someone could further explain the "add gap" option that goes along with a fermata? The documentation does not seem clear on this, at least not to me.

Is this another way of extending the silence that goes along with a fermata, or is the gap they are talking about a visual one that has nothing to do with sound?

Thank you

The fermata does two things:

1. lengthens the sounding note;
2. lengthens the gap of silence after the note.

Also notice (at least on Windows) that the default fermata behavior does not show up as 150% (or whatever) duration in the inspector. It doesn't show up as ANYTHING in the inspector. Checking the Fermata box in the Inspector causes Sibelius to override the default behavior with whatever values you set.

There may be some logic behind this, but it eludes me. Among other things, that means you cannot use the inspector to tell you the default delay values of the 3 flavors of fermata in Sibelius. (It's probably in the doc somewhere.)

Hey Patrick,

It so happens I ran across this today. In the 7.5 ref manual, bottom of pg 571 it says:

"By default, a regular fermata is set to 1.5 times written duration, a long (square) fermata is set to 1.75 times written duration,and a short (triangular) fermata is set to 1.25 written duration, but you can change these settings if you like."
