Sib. 7.0: Didgeridoo
Posted by Lucy Lawrence - 27 Jul 09:58AM
Hello
Does anyone have any idea how to create a didgeridoo sound? The instrument assigned for it is a clarinet - it just does not sound right!

All help gratefully received.

The Sibelius 7 Sounds sample library does not contain a didgeridoo sound. Your first step would be to acquire a sample library that has the sound, and a VST player for that library. Then you would be able to integrate that sound into a Sibelius score.

'Sun Arise' was recorded using 8 double basses instead of the didgeridoo. I've not tried this trick in Sibelius but I have done so in Cubase, using filters on the sound to mimic the didgeridoo player's control of the instrument.

At the time, there were no virtual didgeridoo instruments, hence the need to experiment. Now, there are may virtual instruments with didgeridoo sounds. Just how controllable it would be in Sibelius - that might be interesting, as they're intended for use in a DAW.

Come to think of it, notating for didgeridoo might be interesting as well.

Very funny Adrian!!!

My daughter has a music assignment for school, with the theme of "Australia," hence the need for a didgeridoo. I have had a thought, maybe she should export her composition as a WAV file, then import it into Audacity or Garageband, and add a downloaded Didgeridoo track.

Yes, that's a good way of adding esoteric sounds to a recording.

To the British public, "Australian music" = "Rolf Harris". There's going to be a big no-go area in this project. At least you've still got Kylie and Priscilla.

How strange! I wonder why they didn't use a didgeridoo?

They can't do pizzicato. Actually, I can get an almost digeridoo-like sound on my bass trombone, but I'm useless at circular breathing.

Strange, considering the shape of your stomach.

(I'm making an assumption here, from your liking for Guinness.)

This guy seems to be trying something like it!

Rolf calls "Stop!" at 1'46", presumably in case the bemused-looking conductor forgets to cue the band.

It's a guy called Dal Richards. To be fair, Google reveals that he's had a very respectable career.

Lucy, I could play and record a didge track if you want to send me the score or wav/mp3 with instructions by email.

@Laurence
I always wondered about that since I saw Rolf Harris explain what had been done in a TV interview. I've since read that apparently he hadn't yet learnt to play didgeridoo, but that still doesn't really explain why they didn't get someone else to play it. 'Political' reasons, perhaps?

I learn that everything got re-recorded after he teamed up with George Martin in 1962. I guess that's the version we know. GM liked to put his stamp on things, I believe :-)

Thanks for the offer Kai.
We found a didge loop online and have incorporated it into the piece with Audacity.
