Sib. 7.5: Page Size for iPad
Posted by Peter Jacobs - 26 Jul 06:56PM
I'm switching my band over from printed books to iPads. Everyone will be using an iPad (3rd generation) Retina display. I would love to see a pre-defined page sizes which include most popular tablets such as the iPad. I know I can use the custom size feature for this but this would be a nice addition so I don't have to keep looking up the size. Parts on the iPad should have almost ZERO margins and use the entire screen to compensate for the fact the it is smaller than standard letter. Will this be coming in future updates?

The physical page size might not be relevant if the iPad PDF-viewer can scale any PDF to fit the display. You just need to get the aspect ratio right.

Well, it's hard to find the exact dimensions. It wants to give it to me in pixels. But the display size is (measured diagonally) 9.7 inches. And they tell me the aspect ration is 4:3 (but if I view it in "Portrait Mode", it would be 3:4 I guess.

Anyway, If I figure it out, is there a way to save and name a custom page size?

See page 101 of the Sibelius 7.5 Reference for some recommendations for page sizes destined for the iPad.

I don't know a way of saving a custom page size other than in a House Style or Manuscript Paper.

Hi Peter, What are you using to view scores on iPad and how do your band play? Do they have time between songs, scorch isn't very good but it formats Sibelius scores well and page settings are mainly irrelevant with it but the page still has a bit of desktop visible down the sides in landscape though these are trimmed in portrait mode. It also means no conversion so good for workflow and you can transpose on the fly.

but scorch is pretty rubbish in display in music score view and doesn't have a set list so is poor if you have multiple files if you have a large score library and want to move seamlessly from one score to the next, and it has a nasty habit of jumping to the last page.

And don't forget you can use the iPad in landscape view to see half of an a4 page so resolution is good. (The screen is virtually a5 anyway)

G7 on XP, Sibelius 7.1.3 on 10.6.8, and the slightly buggy scorch 1.2 on iOS 7

I use 10.66 x 14.2 inches. It is the same aspect ratio as the iPad screens (1024x768, or double for the Retina display versions). Any PDF app will display a regular letter sized PDF, but if you want to use as much of the screen as possible, then change the page size and save it as a Manuscript.

I think forScore is the best iPad viewing app for music. It has a great feature too in that it will automatically cut out any wasted white space around the outside of of score so maximising the notation reading area.. I usually place the title much nearer to the first line that I would in a printed score. That way little space is lost at the top too.

If you are using forScore then probably don't need to worry about special iPad sizings just stick to A4. I don't bother with landscape view as you don't want the bother of scrolling lower half of the page. it is bad enough only having one page on view at a time.

Do they like it?

Yes, "forScore" seems to be a favorite choice of apps for reading music on an iPad: http://appadvice.com/appguides/show/Sheet-Music-Readers-For-iPad

Gigbook looks promising too. In one review of forScore a user says:
Gigbook was simpler to grasp as far as navigation books (compilations) and scores.

forScore is $3.00 cheaper.

I wonder if you have to buy the app for each iPad in school or can you get a license?

As far as getting a license for each iPad, Here's how I do it:
Since I own ALL the iPads, I just create one master iPad, and make a backup of it with ALL parts and ALL songs, Then I restore from backup to each slave iPad. Since it is all done under the same Apple ID, I can have as many copies of the app on as many iPads as I want. It has not required me to purchase additional licenses. If the iPads were owned by different people, you could not do it that way.
