Sib. 7.5: Transferring files
Posted by NickG - 20 Jul 11:26AM
I'm in the process of transferring all of my Finale files to Sibelius. The transfers are not alway clean, and I have to do quite a bit of editing. Is MusicXML still the best procedure?

MusicXML is just about the only procedure to transfer files from any other score-editing application into Sibelius.

The transfers will never be perfect, and will nearly always require minor editing corrections in the imported score.

Make sure that, before Finale export, you have updated Finale 2014 to the latest sub-version, and make sure that, before import to Sibelius, you have updated Sibelius to 7.5.1.

After importing your 'House Style' you will need to 're-set design' in Sibelius to get font changes.

I experience different issues in different scores. I've done one today and I found that all gliss lines had disappeared and some note stems were flipped and were frozen - sometimes different within the same bar.

I've never imported an XML/Finale file that did't need a lot of editing.

A Finale colleague seems to have less problems importing via XML from Sibelius.

Hours of fun.

Your current version of Finale isn't going to fall off your computer. You could consider whether the work needed for wholesale conversion is really necessary. Maybe save a pdf, and an XML, do the tidy-up as and when you need to.

This time next year we may all be moving over to the Steinberg progam anyway.
