Sib. 7.5: Make into system results in collapsed staves
Posted by akira - 19 Jul 06:15PM (edited 19 Jul 07:05PM)
I am at a loss to understand why my staves collapse if I selected some staves and then chose "Make into system". See the screenshot enclosed. All I am trying to do is separate different short compositions in a larger score.

What I am trying to do is to make use of the formatting feature "Layout - Spaces between systems", so that I can create larger spaces between the various compositions into which I can insert titles, composer etc. details.

UPDATE: I guess I am barking up the wrong tree trying to use "systems"? If so, how do I make Sibelius realise there are different compositions in a larger score, each of which requires its own title, etc (what spacing rules apply to such sections)?

A "system" is a single line of a piece of music, so Sibelius is doing exactly what you ask: squeezing everything into one line.

To have multiple pieces of music on one file, use a "Final" barline to finish the first piece, and make it the end of a system with a forced new system at that point. You will need to manually drag systems apart to leave room for titles etc.

Thanks, that helped. But what is the difference between a single line of music as you put it and a staff?

A "system" is a collection of staves, to be played in parallel. A system, in music, corresponds to a single line of text in a text editor or word-processor. One system is a single line of music (containing one or more parallel staves) fitted across a page. Each page consists of several systems. The systems are delineated by "system breaks" just as text is delineated by "line breaks".

If you use "Make into system" than all the selected music is squeezed into one line across the page.
