Sib. 7.5: ReWire 'Repair' and 'Clean-Up' buttons not responding
Posted by Wesll Deckers - 17 Jul 01:48PM
Hello everybody,

altough I'm a Sibelius user since version 3 I actually have never 'set foot' at this forum, or maybe once.

Now, however, I got a few stubborn problems and need help to resolve them. Hopefully!

THE SITUATION:
I work with Nuendo 6 (64bit) as a master mixer application. Here, I record bits and pieces, load instruments that cannot be loaded into Sibelius, as well as my own samples.

I use Sibelius as a ReWire-Slave.
Here I make my composition.

I also use Vienna Ensemble from Vienna Symhonic Library.

In order to use Sibelius as a ReWire app I updated from version 6 just a few days ago.
Nuendo does see the Sibelius 7.5 ReWire app.

THE PROBLEM:
Yesterday everything worked: I was able to hit PLAY in Nuendo and Sibelius responded by playing along. This way I could record one instrument to wave, and reload the sample player to free up memory on my notebook, and record another piece.

Today, Sibelius won't start up in ReWire. First it gave me a warning message that the engine failed and I needed to Clean Up, altough the ReWire logo on the Transport-panel did show up.
Alas, I went to the Audio Engine Options and pressed the clean up button, clicked OK when an windows pop-up screen asked if Sibelius could perform its task, and then restarted Sibelius.

No ReWire.
Since then it seems impossible to get it back to work. Sibelius automatically turned on the "Use Virtual Instruments", thus greying out the ReWire buttons below.
When I uncheck "Use Virtual Instruments" and reboot Sibelius, the ReWire buttons do show up... but nothing happens when I press either of them.

Several attempts of trying to Repair or Clean Up, as well rebooting the entire notebook, have not showed any improvement or results.

What is going on here?
I did not upgrade to get this sort of problems, spending almost 3 days to set up and not being able to play a single note.

PC= notebook, from Asus, with Intel Core i7-2670QM CPU @ 2.20GHz, 6 GB of installed memory (not much, I know, but have to wait until I don't need the notebook long enough for the shop to install more memory), using 64bit Windows 7 SP1.

Any help, tip or advice is much appreciated!
Many thanks,
Wes Deckers

Sibelius 7.5 has been superseded by Sibelius 7.5.1.
Please try the free update to 7.5.1 before anything else.

Thank you.
I started up and see that it actually is 7.5.1 build 209.

I just read the article of the first link (363759):
[QUOTE] Sibelius may still think that it’s connected to another audio application via ReWire: You should find you can click OK on the error message and still get into Sibelius, but you’ll find you don’t get any sound during playback. To fix this, open Playback Devices (click the dialog launcher button in the Play > Setup group in Sibelius 7, or in the Play menu in Sibelius 6 and Sibelius 5) and click the Audio Engine Options button. There, see if the Cleanup and Repair buttons are active. If so, click these and restart Sibelius.
[END QUOTE]
The thing is... the buttons Cleanup and Repair are 'active' but clicking on them doesn't do anything at all.

I haven't read the second article (362399) and will do that now.

Thank you!

@ Robin Walker:
In the article 363759, the second option reads:
[QUOTE] If you’re still getting the error on startup, it could be that Sibelius’ ReWire needs to be manually reset. To do this, Quit Sibelius and delete the file called sibelius.rewire from the following locations:

Windows Vista and 7 (Sibelius 7):
C:\Users\Your username\Appdata\Roaming\Avid\Common
[END QUOTE]

But in that folder, there is only a file "SibeliusDevice.log"

Very strange.

Also, I already followed all the steps from the 362399 article, including the Sibelius reinstallation. To no avail as it seems.

All help is welcome, many thanks!

You won't see them doing anything. But if you quit and restart Sibelius, then playback should be working again.

Many thanks, Robin Walker, hopefully it will work now after a fresh install of Sibelius.
The 'Clean Up' button, though, did at one time result in a Windowd pop-up screen, asking permission for Sibelius to alter Windows.

I will look further into the problems, but have now no idea where to proceed.
Especially when everthing worked day one, but the next at startup did not work.

However, I frequently use the 'snoozing mode' where the notebook does close down and cut off its use of power, and writes everthing in the memory to hard drive.
Could that be a potential problem maker?

Dear all, it appears there's more to it than I thought.
Today I installed everything on my 'big computer' (Windows 7, 64 bit, 12 GB of RAM) and at first things went OK.
I even got rewire to work at the first go!

But then... I made a mistake by selecting all incoming MIDI devices (various from LoopBe30) so that when I touched a key on the keyboard, it went looping and sent Sibelius into a freeze.

After that, no matter what I do, I can't get ReWire to work again. These buttons seems to do nothing.
At one time, the ReWire logo showed up in the Transport-panel, but it didn't sync with nuendo. I then pressed the CLEAN UP button, and that was the first and only time, so far, on this computer, that a Windows-pop-up screen came on with the question if it should permit Sibelius to undertake an action in Windows. I pressed YES but after reboot, nothing.

Why is it so difficult to reset ReWire?

After using Garageband to record a short track, I got an error message on starting up Sibelius 7.5.1 telling me to 'clean up' in Audio Engine. I always had to do this in Sib 6 after using Garageband. This time, though, it makes no difference. I click 'Clean Up', quit Sibelius, and on startup the error message comes up again. I can't play back my work at all. The 'Repair' button is not live. I've only just managed to set up Sibelius to run on my new MacBook Air after a massively involved and problematic process. And now I STILL can't get on with my work. I'm not technically minded and I'm really worried that the only solutions I can see anywhere involve deleting things and reinstalling and basically using up even more hours of time and frustration. I'm a self-employed musician and I use both these programmes all the time. What happens when I next need to record a track on Garageband? I'm at my wits' end.

Nia,
Try the "manual reset" procedure in:

Thanks Robin. Manual says:

'If you’re still getting the error on startup, it could be that Sibelius’ ReWire needs to be manually reset. To do this, Quit Sibelius and delete the file called sibelius.rewire from the following locations:
Mac OS X (Sibelius 7):
Macintosh HD/Users/Your Username/Library/Application Support/Avid/Common'

Unfortunately there's no such file there. The closest I can find (which isn't in that folder) is Rewire Launch, and deleting that makes no difference.

Also - it still leaves the issue of how to go on using both Garageband and Sibelius 7 (both of which I use daily as part of my work)?

You should NEVER have both Sibelius and GarageBand open at the same time. GarageBand always creates this problem. Make sure that you quit one before opening the other.

I haven't had them open at the same time. I always quit Sibelius when I've finished working on it, and ditto with Garageband.

I've now tried following instructions from Sibelius Support, including uninstalling and reinstalling Sibelius - hasn't made any difference whatsoever. I still can't hear or play back my music on Sibelius. This is seriously affecting my work, any help appreciated, thanks.

Nia, please attach screen-shots of the following Sibelius dialogue windows:
1. Playback Devices;
2. Audio Engine Options.

If you are still receiving any error messages when launching Sibelius, please attach a screen-shot of those as well.

Please tell us which physical audio output device you are attempting to use: the Mac's built-in audio, or some external card?

Apparently it's ReWire? Screenshots attached. Although the Clean Up button is always live, clicking it makes no difference.

If you have not already done so, please follow the instructions in:
http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/error_message/en363759
to manually reset the ReWire state.

Then, please do this:
- ensure Sibelius is fully quit: if unsure, restart the Mac OS;
- in what follows, do not use Spotlight/search, but follow the paths given;
- in the Finder, hold down the Option key while pulling down the "Go" menu, and select "Library";
- in "Library", open sub-folder "Application Support";
- in "Application Support", open sub-folder "Avid";
- in "Avid", open sub-folder "Sibelius 7.5";
- in "Sibelius 7.5", delete the sub-folder "PlogueEngine";
- launch Sibelius 7.5;
- try to playback a score;
- quit Sibelius completely;
- repeat the above instructions to navigate in the Finder to the folder "Sibelius 7.5";
- in "Sibelius 7.5", open sub-folder "PlogueEngine" (it will have been freshly re-created by running Sibelius);
- in "PlogueEngine", open the file "PlogueEngine.log" into a plain-text editor;
- copy the contents of "PlogueEngine.log" and paste it into your next post in this thread.

There is the evidence. You should delete the file "sibelius.rewire" from that path given in the message above.

Do not use Spotlight/search to find it. Either:
(a) follow the path given above from the root of hard disk, or:
(b) using the Finder, hold down the Option key while pulling down the "Go" menu, and select "Library", then follow the path:
Application Support/Avid/Common/
to locate and then delete the file "sibelius.rewire".

I am having issues also with Rewire and If go to Play/Setup/Configuration/Audio Engine/and I the Repair and Clean Up buttons are not active. I tried to erase sibelius.rewire manually but I did not find it in the folder as mentioned in the manual.
I had this issue in the past and it was solved reinstalling Sibelius. But now I reinstalled it and the problem happened again.››‹ Picture Attached

Pablo, what problem are you having that leads you to think that you need to click either of those buttons? It is the normal and correct state for those buttons to be inactive. Please provide evidence of the actual problem.

By the way, if you are correct in saying that you are using Sibelius version 7.0.0, then that might be part of the problem. You should have taken the free update to version 7.1.3 long ago.
