Sib. 7.5: Frozen and Disappearing Text

Frozen and Disappearing Text

On page-1, shown in , if you orient the page as shown, and slowly move page down, the boxed [B] text will disappear. If I try to select and delete the [B] nothing happens. It is also frozen in place.

The same happens at the top of page-3, , only the page orientation and movement is just opposite. Orient page three as in image 2 and slowly move the page up it will disappear. Similarly it can't be deleted or moved.

Again, same on the bottom of page-3,

I searched the forum but the only thread on frozen text's solutions didn’t work.

This happened when I tried to drag these objects from one page to the next. It appeared as though they disappeared but then I noticed they were as they are described above.

How do I delete them?
Thanks,
Peter

Those "boxed text" objects are attached to a specific measure (not the page). You should NEVER try to move objects across pages; results will be "less than satisfactory." Cut (or copy) and paste to the nearest bar. The box text letter "B" at the top of p.3 appears to connected to bar 16 on p.2. The "B" at the bottom of p. 3 is connected to bar 84 on p. 4. Doing a SELECT ALL (Crtl+A) and Reset Position (Shft+Ctrl+P) gets it (and everything else) back to original positions. Then objects can be deleted as desired.

Another way to select it would be to start your cursor off the (left) edge of the page, hold SHIFT and draw a box around it and several measures. If the text gets selected, then a Reset Position would only affect a few bars, and puts the text back to where it was attached.

Why not use rehearsal marks in those spots, instead of boxed system text (or boxed text, which some of them are)? That's really what you're looking for, I think. You can alter the positioning of those rehearsal marks in the Appearance/Design and Position/Text Styles/Rehearsal Marks dialogue box (and maybe the Text/Styles/Rehearsal Marks in the TEXT menu). Whatever you decide, be consistent with the type of text (Technique, Plain Text, System Text, etc.). They will each behave differently.

You might also consider reviewing the manual regarding text styles and how each style has its own characteristics. It could make your scoring much less frustrating. :-)

I also see what you're desiring with the page number embedded with the title. There should be a way of creating that automatically using wildcards (reference the manual). By doing that you wouldn't need to manually position each one; it would be created in the proper position for each page. You might have to create a new page number style to use, and insert the appropriate wildcards... more knowledgeable minds than mine might chime in with specific directions. Good luck!

Hi Peter,

There seems to be some more issues at play here (in addition to what’s already been mentioned).

The Bar Numbers aren’t moving up in the normal sequence – which could be the result of Sibelius not understanding how the repeat structures work. or perhaps the lack of ending lines is causing it.

Measure 4 repeats itself in what should be bar 5.

and then for some reason Measure 4–7 have made a pact to repeat themselves on practically every other system following bar 19.

Summary of measures per system. . .

m16 — m19
m4 — m7
m32 — m35
m4 — m7
m48 — m51
m4 — m7
m64 — m67. . .
. . . where the count up straightens out through bar number 84. before the final instance of m4 – m7 shows up again.

This seems more involved than the typical problem with repeats that I’ve seen in the past. . . . and I have to wonder if maybe the ultimate issue here is that this score started its life in another music notation program. Perhaps this is best explained as a bad conversion or import into Sibelius???

Hi Jim,

You put your finger on the second problem I have with this score. I notice it after I had copied/pasted sections from the beginning to the end to extend the score. It appeared to have copied the bar numbers along with everything else.

The conversion came from another notation application that I saved as a MIDI file and opened in Sibelius. The original conversion was without problems and was only about 32 bars long. As noted above, the problem occurred when I copied/pasted.

I've tried to fix by deleting all and renumbering through Appearance>Engraving Rules>Bar Numbers, but the problem persist.

Is there any way to "strip" the score of the bar number associations and renumber?

Thanks,
Peter

Try the following. . .

– Select All
– Filter for Bar Numbers (the option on the Filter's pull down menu)
– Delete

If I had known it would be so easy, I would have offered the suggestion the first time around. :-)

Take Care,

Jim

Hi Dennis,

"Manual!? I don't need no stinking manual!?" Well, maybe I do ;o)

Thanks for the solution to the problem. I selected all and did a Reset Position. Very little effect on other elements of the score. I will take your advice and get back into the learning curve. What you suggest make sense.

Peter
