Sib. 7.1: Don't like swiping between ribbon panels
Posted by phidler - 16 Jul 09:12PM
I've recently upgraded from 6 to 7, and like much of what I see. But part of the behavior of the interface perplexes me: when I'm using the ribbon, the slightest horizontal brush of my mouse will switch me to the adjacent ribbon panel. Worse yet, it does so with momentum, so I often inadvertently find myself several panels away from where I was (I'm using the Apple Magic Mouse, so the surface works as a trackpad when the mouse is not moving).

Is there any way to disable the swiping of panels in the ribbon and just click the desired tab to navigate between them?

You probably have to go into the Magic Mouse System Prefs in order to change this.

I can't think of a setting within Sibelius that would change the function of the middle scroll wheel, let alone the swiping gestures that Apple is so fond of. . . But there's a good possibility of this happening via the mouse's drivers, so it's probably worth a try.

I think sometimes the Magic Mouse is too clever for its own good :-)

I'd be happy to see the return of the behaviour in Sibelius 6, where each menu opened as you moused over the titles. Very useful and quick when you couldn't remember which menu a certain command was in. And the Ribbon is only an expanded menu - though somewhat harder to find things in, partly due to the distracting icons, partly due to the excessive width, making it hard to scan.

But 'Find in ribbon' sometimes helps, when all sense of logic fails.

There is a free utility called MagicPrefs which might help:

http://magicprefs.com/

I don't have a Magic Mouse to try this out. But if someone does and can document settings and results, I'll be happy to post something on the blog.
