Sib. 7.5: MIDI dynamic vs. printed dynamic markins
Posted by Gregory M. Lile - 15 Jul 12:36PM
Will any printed dynamic markings (p, f, mf, pp, etc.) override any expression preserved in an imported MIDI file? If so, is it a 100% override, or will any accented notes still carry more 'weight' than notes that were unaccented during the MIDI performance? I'd like to have a file that LOOKS nice and SOUNDS nice with printed dynamics as well as preserving the originally recorded dynamics from the live-performed MIDI file.

Any insights, suggestions, experiences with how Sibelius handles this and how I can exploit it for my purposes?

When you import a midi file, when Live Playback is on, you hear the original midi file played back..NOT the score you see in front of you that Sib has created based upon your Midi import settings.

To hear THAT score, Live Playback must be off, and you wont hear any different dynamics unless youve specifically added them to the score.

And, in addition to no dynamics the score will also sound different, from the midi file, as Sib had to notate, or translate the midi file to score notation. This difference varies, based upon your import settings and the complexity of the midi file youre importing.

Pls see p 499-500 Sib 751 pdf ref manual, and attachment

"Add Dynamics From Live Playback

Adds dynamics, in Expression text, to the selected passage or the whole score, based on the Live Playback velocities of the notes. This is useful for adding dynamics to music that was input via Flexi-time, or by importing a MIDI file."

Using this plugin will convert the velocities in the midi file to printed dynamics, that you will both see and hear in the score.

So the best transcription of a midi file, really depends on:
1) the complexity of the midi file itself
2) Your Midi import settings
3) Your settings using the above plugin.

Its best to experiment and find what works best for a piece, and sometimes the results from a few Midi imports that work best in spots can be copied and pasted into one file.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Bob

Or, rather more concisely: Turn on Live Playback.

Having Live Playback on, as explained above, will play back the original midi file..NOT the score you see in front of you.

This is a very important point, as when I was new to this I was AMAZED how good Sib's midi import was..however I was hearing the original midi file, and NOT the score on the screen.

When I played back the score on the screen, with Live Playback off I heard the differences..and no difffering dynamics

And again as stated above, these differences will vary.

Thanks Bob

Dear All,

now I'm working (first time in my life) on a piece for string orchestra imported from MIDI (exported from Cubase). That's fine to have the dymanics as text with the plug-in mentioned above, but what about crescendo and diminuendo changes? Is there a way to convert these many-many CC MIDI messages into hairpins?

Thanks in advance,
Peter

Might I respectfully suggest that you start a new thread on this. the one you are posting in is over 7 years old. It may be that Bob Z has an updated version of this plugin or knows of a way to do what you need.
