Sib. 7.5: Sib 7.5.1: dynamics in two voices not working
Posted by Frank Wilhoit - 12 Jul 01:31AM (edited 12 Jul 01:32AM)
The documented behavior is: two voices, voice 1 has its own dynamics in dark blue, voice 2 has its own dynamics in green, playback should read both sets of dynamics.

See the attached file. When I play this back, the dynamics in voice 1 (dark blue, NOT light blue) affect both voices. The green dynamics for voice 2 are not rendered.

What am I doing wrong?

(EDIT: Sibelius 7.5.1, NotePerformer 1.3.3, Windows 8.1 x64)

Thanks,
FW

If you remove one or the other, you can hear the proper dynamics, of the voice thats left.

What I believe you need to do is create another staff which will only have the Voice 2 lower oboe in it, with its dynamics, and hide it, and use that for playback.

So with what you have, filter for Voice 2, and copy it--

and then while its still selected, either change all noteheads in Voice 2 to the silent one, #9, or turn off its Play on Pass in the Inspector-- and then paste the Voice 2 you copied into its own new staff, and hide that staff.

In the end, you'll see what you originally had, but the playback for the Voice 2 lower oboe will come from the hidden staff, and you'll get proper playback.

Thanks Bob

That's not the documented behavior. It's supposed to work as it is written. I very much appreciate that you are trying to be helpful, but if any substantial number of other people were having this same problem and were having to do such backflips to get round it, this forum would be full of the evidence. It isn't. So I dare think that something else is going on and I hope that someone from Avid will weigh in.

Thanks very much,

It looks like this may be (in part) a NotePerformer problem.

I tried something similar in 7.1.3 for piano - a combination that usually handles two-voice dynamics correctly. Voice 1 going from pp to ff (with a hairpin); voice 2 going from ff to pp. With Sibelius Sounds and with GPO4 it pretty much went as it should. With NotePerformer the results were just plain weird. The two voices used the same dynamics level. The first and last note used the voice 2 dynamics - ff for the first not and pp for the last. All the notes in between used voice 1 dynamics - a crescendo from pp to ff.

Hi Pat--

FWIW,in Sib, I seem to remember that if the instrument is polyphonic, such as a piano, then the different dynamics, in different voices, on one stave works.
I just tried this and it does seem to be the case..

However with a single voiced instrument-an oboe, or flute, etc., the dynamics of the uppermost voice seems to be the dynamics used for all voices, and I believe the method I described is the workaround.

I hope Im remembering this correctly..all I tried seem to bear it out.

Thanks Bob

Frank, this problem appears to be uniquely a NotePerformer problem. Other players do not exhibit the same issue. Please contact Wallander support.

It'll also depend on how the instrument is set up in the sample library. If the instrument responds to NoteOn Velocity for dynamics then each voice can have separate dynamics. If though the dynamics are defined with a MIDI CC controller, the sound can only respond to one value at a time, so the instrument will only have one level of dynamic at any one time.

Thanks Sam. That explains why the problem is limited to only certain sound libraries.

It appears to still be a problem in NotePerformer (I don't think they've released an update since May '15). I've been getting around the problem by setting MIDI velocities directly for my voice 2.
