Sib. 6.x: Samplemodeling soundset
Posted by Michel Plasse - 08 May 12:51PM
Hello, does somebody have a soundset for Samplemodeling?
I have bought their Saxophones, which sound very well when used in real time from a keyboard, but I can't make them sound in Sibelius (version 6.2).

This is for the Sound Set Project by Jonathan Loving, and is highly recommended.

Pls see:

"Need a Sound Set?

Do you need a sound set for a sample library or hardware device we haven't covered? Let us know! We prioritize development, almost exclusively, based on user demand, so the more you tell us the better we can serve you."

The link that you click on there is the following, a form:

Hope this helps--

Thanks Bob

Thank you for the link. Unfortunately the soundsetproject does not have yet a sound set for any samplemodeling library.

But as Bob quoted in his posting, Johnathan accepts requests. You have nothing to lose by asking for the soundsets. If soundsets for the libraries can be created, Johnathan can (and probably will) do it. And at a very reasonable price.

Plus you'll get the pleasure of working with someone who really goes out of his way to help people.

The soundset aside, what is the playback engine for this library? Is it listed - and activated - in the Configuration panel? Until that happens, nothing will play. Sorry if you have already done this, but a few more details will help get this sorted out.

What is “Kontakt” or “Kontakt Player”?

Kontakt is a software necessary to make our instruments work. There are two versions available:
- Free Kontakt Player version. It´s added to all our products, so no additional software is needed;

There is no difference between both versions as far as the functionality of our instruments is concerned."

Quite a few of the recent Samplemodeling range of instruments including the saxophones no longer need to be hosted by Kontakt but use their proprietary SWAM sound engine. Sadly these fantastic instruments don't work well with Sibelius as they require real-time controllers for expression. You have to send expression pedal volume messages to get the instrument to sound at all. They work better played in a DAW program either via a controller keyboard with expression volume pedal and also careful use of modulation and pitch bend. Even better of course played with a MIDI wind controller. I seem to remember contacting Jonathan a good while back about the Samplemodeling instruments and he was not hopeful of producing suitable soundsets. Might be worth contacting again though and seeing if the picture had changed.

And if you don't have a super computer you probably can't play more that 2 or 3 saxes at the same time, they are very cpu hungry.

Thanks to all. I can now make Sibelius play the instruments.

I had to send before playback a midi controler for the expression volume. I sent it through the midi keyboard before playback, which doesn't work. Instead, I wrote a midi controller directly on the score (~C,) which works.

The result is quite flat, as the great realism of the instruments come from the expression volume more than the velocity (used rather for attacks). A soundset, and a customised sibelius dictionary will be quite useful.

Played in real time, the instruments are really impressive. However, they seem to be monophonic. This is not a problem in solo parts, but is not convenient for ensemble parts or when testing harmonic or polyphonic ideas.

About hardware requirements, a sax quartet works fine on an intel core duo.

My playback conf consists of the four sax instruments (each running the SWAM engine) with manual sounds.
