Sib. 6.x: change hard drive
Posted by Mark Isaacs - 01 May 04:44AM (edited 01 May 05:40AM)
My hard drive is misbehaving. I am thinking of doing an image of it and copying onto a new drive.

Is this operation something that would be picked up by Sibelus' servers for my registration? I'm still using Sibelius 6 even though I have Sibelius 7, so re-registration (or adding another usage) if needed has to be a telephone manual process.

Or does a clone of the HD add up to it being the same machine as far as Sibelius is concerned? I shouldn't have to reinstall anything because it's an image, so just wondering if my registration will be pinged in any way.

Do hard drives identify themselves over the Web? Obviously computers do, as Sibelius' registration process depends on it.

Curious.

Hi Mark--

I recently went thru this--Apple replaced the hard drive of my computer, then the blue tooth, and then the logic board and I had Sib 6.2, 7.1.3 and 7.5 on it.

The advice given to me by support was to always deactivate Sib before work of this nature is done, and then reactivate it when complete--and Sib 6 (when you also have Sib 7) now requires Avid to help with the re-registration, if necessary.

If needed you can also contact the Avid registration support team. Please complete the form here:

http://avid.force.com/Support/RegistrationCaseCreation

or here

http://www.sibelius.com/documents/contact_form.html

Hope this helps--and that all goes smoothly:)

Thanks Bob

I recently did this on my Windows 7 machine with both sib 6 and sib 7.1/.5. I had absolutely no problems with Sibelius. I just cloned the old drive onto the new and away I went. I DID have problems, though, with Windows itself. I had to upgrade the intel drivers before it accepted that it was still a genuine windows installation. neither Microsoft nor Sony were any help at all with this.

As re-activation of Sibelius 6 alongside an activated Sibelius 7 will require a chat with the Registration Support guys I suggest you de-activate Sibelius 7 before the disk transfer, but leave Sibelius 6 alone.

7 should re-activate online. 6 may retain its activation. If not, THEN talk to Registration Support.

Thanks all, have been researching meantime.

Laurence, I'll take a chance and not deactivate Sibelius 6 in case it gets through the clone. I can always contact support then if it doesn't as you say. Makes sense, since reactivation can't be done online in any case.

It seems from my Googling that the system problems come when a substantial number of hardware components change. Microsoft have specifically said that there is no problem with Windows if the hard drive alone is changed.

My Googling also seems to reveal that Mike's problem could be caused when cloning to an Advanced Format drive. Essentially these hard drives went from the standard 512 byte to 4 KB size sectors and some software made assumptions that the sector size would not change once the system had been installed. It seems Intel drivers are part of the solution here.

Bob, from what I have read, changing that many components as you did may be enough to require deactivation and reactivation.
