I need to indicate open E played on the violin top string, and an E on the A sting played at the same time, ie a note one side of the stem, and a notehead the other side. I have no doubt that this in in the index somewhere under the correct musical term, but I don't know what it is. Can someone tell me how to get it, please?

Select the note, then hit "1" on the keyboard (not the numeric keypad).

Select the note, hit (top row) 1. To add a note a "1th" above.

Well that's the funny thing - it is simple if you know it, not easy to find if you don't. Have you gone through the tutorials? they can be a real help in getting a lot of these quick solutions to the forefront.

When I started with Sibelius in '03, I had the printed manual - well written, a sense of humor, and cross-referenced. It was easy to pick it up, thumb through, and read about some procedure; by doing so, I learned about a lot things long before I needed them. Suffice to say, it's just not the same with a pdf...

You'll find some examples of it if you search the Reference for "Unison". No explicit instructions for what you needed, afaics. The instructions for creating chords by pressing top-row number keys to add an interval above states you can "Type 1-9". You might have wondered what 1 did...?

Pls see p 210 Sib 713 pdf ref manual, and attachment:

* To build up a chord using alphabetic input, input one note of the chord, then add further
noteheads using one of these methods:
% hold down Shift and type the letter-name of the pitch you want to add above, so to add a G#,
first type 8 on the first Keypad layout to select the sharp, then type Shift-G to add the note; or
% type a number 1–9 (from the main keyboard, not the keypad) to add a note of that interval
above the current note, so to add a note a sixth above, type 6; Shift-1–9 adds notes below the
current note, so Shift-4 adds a note a fourth below the current note. (Usefully, this also works
for selected passages, e.g. to create octaves). Or
% choose the appropriate option from the Note Input > Intervals > Above or Below menus,
although it’s much quicker to use the keyboard shortcuts described above"
