We have found a bug in some Sibelius 7.5 shipping plugins that are causing other downloadable plugins that call them to get incorrect data.

Usually the problem is that the plugins want to know the folders where user plugins live, and due to the bug, they are getting the Sibelius 7 plugin folders, rather than those of Sib 7.5. So in some cases they will look at and output to the wrong folder.

I have determined that at least the following plugins are affected. They are fortunately mostly somewhat obscure plugins, but do be careful if you use any of them.

Copy Plugin
Find Edited Shipping Plugins
Install New Minimum Plugin
Restore Edited Shipping Plugins
Are Your Plugins Up To Date
Run Plugins By Name
Export Doc Layout Style
Export Manuscript Paper Unchanged
Import House Style To Manuscript Paper
Import Doc Layout Style
Create Add Line Plugin
Backup Plugin
Clone Plugin
Create Insert Symbol Plugin
Get User Folder Names
Restore Plugin
Create Add Text Plugin


The Preferences plugin which is called by many other plugins, is also affected. Preferences is used to save a plugin's settings from one run to another, and it is picking up the database from Sib 7 rather than Sib 7.5. Again, this is probably not a big problem for most users, but it might be good to be aware that this is happening.

The Avid folks have been notified about this problem.

So, yet again, a so-called improved version of Sibelius is more buggy than the previous one!

I also have the strange feeling that the human playback (Musictranscribers) is affected, too.

In Sib. 7.5 it extends the life-note duration when randomizing the startpoint. Not so in Sib. 7

Done this 3 times with the same result, - randomized duration.

I would doubt that this specific bug would have that kind of effect. The bug just causes the plugins to think that the folder used for plugins in 7.5 is the version 7 folder. Check with Roman, though, and see if he knows what is going on.

To be fair, any major new release is likely to be more buggy than a stable previous release. The final test team (often called "users") is still working on it. If 7.5.1 (or whatever it will be) is still noticeably buggy, then we will have reason to complain.

Yes, I note that the problem code was fine before 7.5; it was just the changing of the major version number to a non-integer that made this problem occur.

In most of the plugins affected, you would likely not even notice it. I only found the problem because if affected one downloadable plugin (Install New Plugin, which I have fixed and updated) to give obvious wrong results.

Just a note to mention that this problem has been fixed in Sibelius 7.5.1. Changes were made to the shipping plugin utils.plg (in the Other category), which implement the fixes.

The original code in utils.plg was not expecting the version name to include a decimal point in the version number, and just rounded it away.

While it is unlikely that you have a private copy of utils.plg, if you do, you should use the updated version instead. If you have made changes to utils.plg (which is also unlikely), you should merge those changes into the copy of the updated plugin.

All the affected plugins I mention should be OK as of 7.5.1, and plugins that save preferences will be using the appropriate database in the 7.5 file tree, rather than using the one for 7.1.
