Sib. 7.1.3: Shared part problems- removing extra staves and system separators
Posted by amstimac - 14 Apr 11:37PM
Hey all!

I have a couple problems when creating a combined Violin I/II part from an orchestral score. I'm trying to accomplish two things:

1) I need Sibelius to recognize when Violin I and II are playing the same part and reduce it to one staff, then return to two staves when the parts are different again. See staves 3 and 4 in the attached part. I tried using the "Reduce" plugin but it doesn't eliminate the extra staff. I don't want to just delete one of the staves if I can avoid it, to maintain the integrity of the session.

2) When this happens (going from one staff to two, and vice versa), I would like system separators to appear between the systems, but ONLY then. Otherwise they're unnecessary and clutter the part. I looked through the forums and it appears the only suggested solution for hiding separators is to set the Engraving Rules so that the system separators appear "when 2 staves or more", then trying to mask the extraneous separators by placing a white graphic over them. But as others pointed out, this doesn't work with repeated system text like separators. So still no luck.

I see these two things on a lot of professional parts so I know it's possible....just a matter of HOW!?

This has been a big fat source of frustration, so THANK YOU in advance!!!

Sibelius can't do this automatically - unless there's a plugin somewhere that I don't know about - but you can do it manually by having three staves. One is the unison parts and the others are standard violin 1 and 2 without the unison sections. Place the unison part between the other two. You will have to contrive to place system breaks (select a barline and press the large enter key) at places where the parts transfer from split to unis. This is to make sure that the empty bars can be hidden on a page.

You will need to do this in the parts as well.

You can use a symbol for the system separator to use where you want it. You might also want to place arrows at the ends of systems to indicate where they join/separate which, if you have the rests correct, will always occur at a system end.

The attached is a crude attempt to do what you want.

[Edit] I have had another play with this and remembered that you need to tweak the part as well as the score. You should create a separate part containing the three staves and apply the same formatting as you did in the score.

Hi Mike,

Thanks so much for the quick reply! I got a bit swamped for a while there, but finally got a chance to look at the sample you put together. The workaround you suggested looks great in the final product, I just would have preferred for the sake of the layout to not have the extra staves to mess with. I'm really surprised that as a program for professional copyists, Sibelius doesn't have the capability to perform this function automatically. But until a plugin or something gets added, this looks good! Thanks!
